[Complete] The Hermit's (not-so-hidden) Hideout [ROOM BUILD]

DigitalHermit

DigitalHermit's

(not-so-hidden)

Hideout

Background

So, our house was in need of renovations in order to add capcity... Currently the house is a 55m2 2LDK with 1 toilet and bath... This little hovel houses 3 people currently, but needs to expand to make room for 2 more (and can fit up to 32 guests). Our solution? Add a room. This is less than a PC build log and more of a nerdcave/room build log since there will be very little modifications to my current gear...

The room is around 1.8288mx2.1336ft in size...

Oh... and my Sony 4kW Component System died (failed amplifiers), so I switched it out with my Kenwood 3.5kW Component system...

Pardon the crappy pictures... my A536 doesn't have the best camera...

The Materials

  • 3x Galvanized Iron Tracks
  • 6x Galvanized Iron Studs
  • 4x 3.5mm thick marine plywood
  • 1x standard PVC door
  • 1x Sliding Window set
  • [additional materials to be added upon need]

The Build

251ca37d21.jpg

A dump, no? That thing on the right covered by cloth is a 1960's era (I think) Singer sewing machine that my dad restored...

The stuff on the floor on the left are the GI tracks and studs and the PVC door is visible on the right...

So first things first... We had to clear out...

^Denatured Alcohol Cannon (of sorts)^

I also found my uncle's ceremonial rapier but that's for later...

9225be8c78.jpg

Had to put some stuff back since the rest of the house was getting cramped... We still got rid of more stuff after the frame got installed...

ab7c42d679.jpg

0dce3fd7aa.jpg

The GI studs provide the framework of the wall... Both sides are covered with the 3.5mm marine plywood held up by a lot of blind rivets...

484d6fab6c.jpg

Right behind that wooden side table of sorts is an outlet that had shorted multiple times and still live... no pics since I was too busy with something else while it was being neutralized (temporarily)...

Still a lot of stuff, no?

a5b666077d.jpg

That window is made of stained aluminum with lightly tinted glass and a screen... I was impressed by the people who made it since we only placed the order yesterday...

This picture was taken midday so the tint is not that obvious.

Cat Barrier installed!!

Electrical fittings installed!!

Painting finished!!

Complete!!

Nice.

Are you going to continue with it and show us the end result, maybe with a PC in there.

I'll post the whole project...

Planned updates:

  • Electrician comes and adds light fixture and fixes outlet
  • Painting is completed
  • I relocate my stuff and modify my desk
  • Stretch goal: The loft bed gets built

Stay tuned for more since the project is proceeding faster than anticipated...

Cat Barrier installed!!

This is to keep the dozens of stray cats from getting inside the house... also a deterrent for thieves...

That tarp is for extra rain protection... we've had that since the house got built..'

The tiled wall is the neigbor's house... goes to show how small the lot sizes in the area are...

I'm going to need a bit of input here...

I'm having rouble selecting the color of paint that I'll be using...

The color of the door is close to Tamiya XF-53...

81753.jpg

Can anyone suggest a good wall color to match this? preferrably not as dark...

Please post in Hex Code...

Thanks.

Got all the stuff at AllHome... a new hardware chain that opened up near us.. Pretty much a one-stop builder's shop...

I'm looking to get the flooring changed... but that will have to wait...

Painting is scheduled to begin tomorrow...

This includes retouching the pedestal that my PC will be placed on top of...

This is so wonderfully ghetto but still somewhat not-ghetto... I love it. I take it the exhaust fan is to suck heat out after a long 4K 60FPS porn watching session? I mean... Heavy duty gaming session?

More or less ghetto (houses here are small... 55 m2 is actually a decent size for most homeowners...)... that exhaust fan is just to provide some extra airflow when needed (like during intense porn gaming sessions)...

Just to give a sense of scale, that sliding window is approx 7 feet long by 4 feet high...

That is pretty small. Best part about having your weekend setup in your grandma's basement: ROOM. Even though I am going to clean this fucking pit really soon. OMG. SO MESSY.

Dem CRTs and beige boxes...

My beige box had plans on a file server life, and it has the networking to back it up (4x 10/100 connections and 3 FireWire 400). And my CRT will hopefully be used as a secondary monitor eventually. I just need a DVI to VGA adapter.

How are you going about the room temps?, Airconditioning perhaps? Here in Cebu during summer its 32-34 degrees celsius outside the house, my pc gets a 55-60'Celsius while on gaming load during the afternoon my room is not airconditioned yet.

UDPATE: ROOM PAINTED! 90% done!!

Finally got to painting the thing

d6bf7ac56a.jpg

de75b9e38d.jpg

Should've sanded it first before priming... Have no equipent to do that so... screw it... I'll texture it with elastomeric later...

188295b738.jpg

e7317b5998.jpg

Remeber, don't do as I do and use the proper PPE for painting... Paint thinner burns...

041d1c5535.jpg

Going to retouch the paint and get the pedestal for my PC ready tomorrow.... If we finish early, I'll start rewiring the phone lines... so there might be no updates for tomorrow (I'm on DSL)...

I'm really liking the off-white matte finish... Must be because of this baby...

Huge ass window... PC will be positioned such that it exhausts out of the room. through the window...

Added 10cm ceiling exhaust for extra airflow...

BUILD COMPLETE!!

Finally completed everything...

3c355f6ca0.jpg

Reinforced the top using the leftover plywood and applied a fresh coat of dark oak varnish...

Buying a handle for it a bit later... The varnish made the door too tight so I might sand it down when I feel like it...

It'll save you a lot of time and effort later...

We didn't have enough material to get the prep work done properly so, this happened

003b993f70.jpg

cf51dfc584.jpg

Also had to scrub off the paint that got on the floor...

here it is after scrubbing..

And this is how the place where my system was at looked like after I got it out

This build's casualty: 1 pair 1USD shorts from 2007.

b499e0d381.jpg

Ripped it while I was scrubbing the floor clean...

Stuff I learned from doing this build:

  • Wear your PPE. Do as I say not as I did.
  • Prep work! It'll save a lot of effort later.
  • Keep your area clean and ventilated... especially if it's a 41C day...

Final build specs:

  • CPU: AMD A8-5600k OC 4.0GHz
  • Cooling: DeepCool Gammaxx S40
  • MoBo: Gigabyte FM2A55M-DS2
  • GPU: Sapphire R7 260X 2xDVI OC
  • Storage: 1x 1TB Seagate Barracuda SATA II, 1x TB WD Green in external USB 2.0 enclosure, 1x 500GB Seagate Barracuda SATA II
  • PSU: FSP Hexa 600
  • Case: AeroCool PGS V2 Advance
  • Fans: 2x 120mm AeroCool fans
  • Monitors: 1x Samsung S19C150 18.5" TN Panel (via acer active HDMI->VGA adapter), 1x Dell 17" monitor (not sure which model)

Networking Hardware:

  • Tenda W268R
  • Prolink H5001NS (DSL modem + wi-fi combo)

Audio:

  • Kenwood xD-V818 3.3kW Component System
  • A bunch of Sony passive speakers
  • Superlux HD-330
