/incoming small rant

how about doing an overview video (an "unboxing" of the software)? go over the features? explain how it's better? explain why I should be interested in it OTHER than just blindly following you because you're Linus

ventrilo, skype, mumble has been around for years. as much as I love your video's, I'm not so blindly guided to just drop what reliable and satisfying software I've been using for years just because you said so

as a sponsor, I need to sell the product/brand - just telling people to download it or softly forcing it (for live calls) doesn't leave the best impression of "sponsor". I know what it's like to have sponsors, and I strongly dislike this blind recommendation method of "promoting" - sell it to me, and sell it to your viewers

/end rant, but my 2 cents. you make videos all the time, making one to showcase the software surely isn't too much to ask for

While I want Linus to do this as much as you probably do, I just wanted to throw my 2 cents into this as well.

I've used Ventrilo, Skype, Mumble, Evolve, and many other gamer oriented VOIP/Text chatting software.

For gaming needs, Razer Comms covers the things I (and I imagine, gamers) want. Simply in that it isn't limited in features like Skype is. Not having video irrelevant imo since this is for gamers chatting via voice/text during game (which they should be watching). Both Ventrilo and Mumble require a server to have group rooms to chat in, but I can make one right now on Razer Comms free and get decent VOIP quality.

The in game overlay is good imo. About on par with the other options.

Other than that, I don't see much difference aside from the obvious bugs that need/will be fixed since it's in Beta.

This is my pitch to my guild about it if you want a more in-depth look from my perspective about it as a gamer:

It's similar to a middle ground between Skype, Evolve, and Mumble.

Essentially, this is the feature list I've seen so far, there could be more:

  1. It has the call quality of Skype without the annoying aspects of the ringing, dropping a call if the host leaves (Comms migrates the host), or having to alt-tab to mess with the program.
  2. An in-game Overlay like Evolve and Steam.
  3. The option to make groups to call all at once (for example, a DND group, a PoE group, etc) that you can sort by game or other identifier. This is the equivalent of having a Mumble channel basically.
  4. You can turn individual game's overlays off while others can be left on.
  5. You can start your games from the program without having to go through Steam or whatever game buying/managing app you have (Ease of life).
  6. It automatically detected literally all the games on my computer, which is quite a few.
  7. It has great auto-detection ability for your microphone/speakers in regards to volume and is easy to adjust that otherwise. It's literally one slider for each and has Push to Talk. It's very intuitive adjusting it.

The only thing I see it lacks is an official "group" page option. We can make our own personal groups, but not a Guild Page like what Evolve has.

I haven't used Evolve's voice chat option as we usually use Mumble in game, but this could sort of combine the two so we only have to deal with one program as Mumble can be... slightly confusing. I've had it not broadcast what I say many times and the options don't help.

It is in Beta right now, so there likely will be bugs, although I haven't seen any in the time I've used it. In fact, it seems to be updated regularly with a "Beta Feedback" button fairly obvious in the software.

It's free, and there's only one ad at the bottom of the screen in a little banner. From what I've heard, that's the extent of advertising they will do and that's it.

I like it overall. We have "About me" sections, so we could put the Guild page's (or this forum's) URL there if we needed it displayed somewhere.

So yeah. I just view it as the perfect middle ground between all the "bests" of each software available, relative to gaming.

It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, But it doesn't even come close to teamspeak3.

As part of the LTT Alibaba crew. which includes a few notable members of the forum (one's already posted in this thread) We've found it to be a buggy but enjoyable experience.
Everytime someone signs on it auto mutes Ghost which is hilarious, and if someone joins voice chat but aren't audible a quick fix is for an admin to mute for all and unmute, then they're working.
If you find any other bugs and issues then please, leave feedback for Razer, they can't improve this great service they've given us access too without input :)

Well, TS masterrace, but that needs a server.

and knowing how much uptime this forum has, it might not be the best way to go.

Such a shame you went for Razer Comms though

And people nagging about skyping throwing a overlay over your games.. (Pic says beta, but don't be scared)

How come none has heard from Xfire?

http://www.xfire.com/

Was made back in 2003

Because its overlay system is so 2009 and shortcuts doesn't really work as they should. I used it with cod but after that it hasn't really been open. Can't comment on audio things like group chat possibility since we used mumble.

Hey Guys,

The plan has changed somewhat for Razer Comms. We'll be using it for the call-ins from our special guests (Logan from Tek Syndicate for the July 19th episode of Th WAN Show, and Lew from UnboxTherapy for the July 26th episode of The WAN Show)

Then we'll also be using it for community call-ins during the afterparty.

Either way I think if you and your gamer friends try it out you'll be impressed by how easy it is to set up and some of the gaming optimized features that it has versus more mainstream chat clients such as SKYPE.

Here's the bitly link that helps support Linus Tech Tips: http://bit.ly/16c6hso

Thanks Everyone!

I spammed that bit.ly link.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, where's the Linux support?

Console optimisations and how they will effect you | The difference between AMD cores and Intel cores | Memory Bus size and how it effects your VRAM usage |
How much vram do you actually need? | APUs and the future of processing | Projects: SO - here

Hah, forgot this. One more reason to go for mumble/TS3 (latter has atleast server support, don't remember if client too)

Yup Linux has a client and a server for Teamspeak 3 ; To be honest I really love Razer Comms and all it's features especially the ability to boot games from it and have an overlay that doesn't cause some games to stop working *looks at Steam and xfire*; I can close steam and skype two of the biggest memory hoggs on my pc (besides google chrome  mine uses 1GB minimum) clears about 3-400MB of RAM and even up to 700MB if I've got a lot of contacts online on Skype and when you only have 4GB of RAM that 1.3-7GB can make a huge difference in terms of game performance.

Sorry shouldn't have given more detail they would have had a contract with razor for a certain amount of shows so the contracted amount has been reached.

Ahh, didn't think of that. I thought something had went down and Razer/Linus didn't want to continue with it.
