4x 4 GB vs 2x 8 GB RAM

Hi,

I want to upgrade my RAM to 16 GB. At the moment I have 8 GB (2x4 GB) Corsair Vengeance RAM in my system (Haswell, i5 4670K).

I have 2 options: For about €60 I can add another set of 2x 4 GB Corsair Vengeance RAM. Or I can buy 2x 8 GB which will cost me around €120,- and sell my old RAM for around €30-40.

Is there a (noticeable) difference between 4x 4 GB and 2x 8 GB?

Hi,

I want to upgrade my RAM to 16 GB. At the moment I have 8 GB (4x2 GB) Corsair Vengeance RAM in my system (Haswell, i5 4670K).

I have 2 options: For about €60 I can add another set of 4x 2 GB Corsair Vengeance RAM. Or I can buy 2x 8 GB which will cost me around €120,- and sell my old RAM for around €30-40.

So which one. 4x2 GB or 2x4 GB? If latter, just add anotehr 2x4GB kit. You'll wanna upgrade to DDR4 anyways, once 16 GB is outdated

4x4 quad channel

Quad channel is only a thing on LGA 2011

who cares...

DDR4 is incompatible with his CPU and motherboard.

The I5-4670K works with the Z87 chipset, which doesn't support DDR4 yet.

That's clear to me, i jsut meant that he would wanna do an entire platform upgrade to DDR4 by the time his 16 gigs are outdated.

who cares...

I always go with the theory that less is better, on RAM, maybe you want to put more RAM, or will be using on future on a rig that have only 2 RAM slots.

Performance difference? There is none.

I don't think you will be upgrading to DDR4/new socket soon, so just choose which 16GB kit is cheaper.

Also, just to enlighten some people here: DDR4 is a whole different physical dimm format. It's 284 pin opposed to DDR3's 240 pin.

So, only socket 2011-3 (X99) boards support DDR4.

I  think 16 GB wil be enough for some time, wasn't planning on upgrading my whole system for a couple of generations! I'm going with 4x 4 GB. Thanks for the help!  :D
