HBO wants to take down VLC Media Player

GoodBytes

The only way to stop or hinder the growth of piracy of the latest medias (video, audio, text, pictures, etc) is to change the media itself. All computers these days have access to software that will play, view, or watch the pirated material, but material obtained legally and pirated material all look and act the same in MOST cases... So until the media producers have a way to sell their content to consumers that will not allow others to "share" that same media and get the same result as buying the media, all this nonsense will continue to whoever can shut down the most random entity until they just give up... basically I'm saying piracy will never stop

Most free software asks you that :)

Like avg and ccleaner :P

Softpedia and filehippo are well known since pre 2007 how don't you know about them :P

Well I haven't "heard of them" because I download all my stuff from the owner's website in the first place.

This is the worst reasoning ever. I'm almost sure people use Windows Media Player to play their ripped movies too. Are they going to tell Microsoft to get rid of that next?

Maybe VLC wanted people to go to their website to download the media player so that they get the ad revenue from the site visit so they posted the request?

Anyway, Google doesn't service these requests any more, because they don't have the manpower or the time to do it.

Really? HBO should be thanking pirates for making their show way more popular than what it would have been:

I personally don't use VLC at the moment (I use Media Player Classic Home Cinema) but I might install VLC at some point. Also what good would it do trying to kill VLC. It's not like it's possible to kill a program. The most they might do would result in VLC's devs recieving a C&D (which could easily be lifted with a court case, I think) but lets assume they somehow manage to shut down VLC. Well then the devs release all the source files that make VLC work and it becomes open source. (I don't actually know if it's open source right now or not so if it is then please correct me) HBO would have to be retarded to think that an opensource program could be killed. This is the internet HBO, worst things have been attempet. (like removing the 3D printed gun blueprints. Still laughing about that!) It's as if these companies and governments had zero idea of how the internet works. Did someone accidently transport them into the future?

BTW Game of Thrones is AWESOME!!

While automated. They approve it. So that means they want it VLC out.

You're an idiot and the thread subject proves it.

And and you might want to read this: http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/03/31/hbo-thrones-piracy/

HBO doesn't give a rats a__ about piracy of Thrones.

The same goes with MS and Copies of windows. unless you are SELLING it.

That is one of those things that confuses me... who goes to torrent sites to download software you can get from the publisher page? I've seen stuff like 7zip on torrent sites. Do some people download everything using torrents?

Stuff like that are uploaded by idiots trying to earn Skulls on Pirate Bay.

"the list contains links to Prince of Persia 5, various free Java applets, Naruto and even a Ben Harper album ... copyright holders have been sending increasingly dubious DMCA lists, which once even included HBO’s own site."

Horribly misleading title. I highly doubt HBO intended for VLC to be on that list, especially considering all the other ridiculous things that made its way on there. It's more than likely a mistake by whatever system is being used to compile 14,855,269 URLs in a month. Nothing to see here, just copyright holders being reckless as usual.

VLC is garbage anyways.

Again, the requests are automated and generated by a computer using an algorithm that's not going to be correct 100%

Some of you remind me of the idiots who scream on forums how EA or some other company is trying to steal their porn stash

because their virus software goes off because of a false positive.

Good god, use your freaking brains people.

VLC was targeted in their algorithm. There isn't any shows from HBO what has Media Player, or VLC, or the initials does VLC or close to it.

Makers of VLC should say sorry your shitty ass show is being pirated and also sorry we have one of the best free media players available. Its not there fault people pirate things. I for one am completely against pirating but I see no point in blaming a bit of software that plays videos or music.

So vlc just got targeted coz someone put this free software up as a torrent on a Pirate torrent site? That's no reason to sue them or whatever.. Lol.

This is pretty non-concerning. Obviously Google won't act on that request.

I hope not!

If it's free/open source, download it from the creators website!

I caught my brother downloading Chrome through some site like softpedia or whatever. Idiot.

The only site worth downloading free software from is ninite.com because of convenience XD

Anyways... it sucks that big companies target smaller ones just for money, even tho VLC cant control what their users use VLC for...

You can easily ... how should I put it, modify an app that is using DRM to not use it (psst search it on DuckDuckGo)

Options:

1. Be sarcastic and join in on the VLC is doing wrong and agree with HBO making them look like a bully, they back down.

2. Go to every media site and say GOT blows (even if you watch it), force the ratings to go down, HBO then stfu.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.
