Is the RM 650 quiet?

flibberdipper

So my EVGA PSU makes an air woosh sound (nothing extreme but it bothers me being louder than everything else in my system, but the damn thing stays cold). I was thinking about selling it and getting an RM650 just for the nice level of quiet. But, how loud is it with the fan actually going? It'd be under that shroud in my Enthoo Pro, so it wouldn't have that much air flow. And also, will I be able to control it with Corsair Link, or will it try to run passive?

I have the RM850 and I think those PSUs have a zero fan mode until 50-60% usage(or more)? I have never heard my PSU even spin up and that is considering my setup :D I am basing it off the dust filter not having a single speck of dust on it :)

I have a HX1000I which also runs passively, it's pretty quiet and if the HXi is anything to go by, yes you should be able to control the fan within corsair link.

How is yours set up in the case though? Keep in mind that mine would be fan down and under a shroud to keep the wires hidden away.

It has a Corsair NL135L fan in it, the last letter makes me think Longlife, which means sleevebearing. It'll be quiet at first, but eventually start making grinding noises.

EDIT; Could also stand for Liquid and that it's some hydrobearing. It's not FDB though.

I've heard people say that the RM series is quite quiet (terrible pun intended). My friend's PC has an RM750, although I only built it for him and haven't seen it in action.

Don't want to void the warranty and the flat cables will really help with the backside. ;)

I have an RM 650, but the fan has never started up on mine so I can't comment much on the noise from it. I do really like that PSU though.

Also tinkering with a PSU's insides can be dangerous if you're not careful.

Had the g2, felt it was the loudest part and got an rm instead. Its dead quiet(The 750w that is).

Corsair link requires you to buy some crappy converter. You will probably be fine without it.

How loud is it when the fan is going? I have no idea, it never really turns on, and if it does, i have never noticed it, so pretty damn quiet considering the fastest fan in my case is 800 rpm

The RM PSUs are quiet, but they are also quite expensive for what they are and there are better quiet optimised units out there

Some Seasonic units are built for quiet operation

i5 4670k - Z87X-UD3H - EVGA GTX 670 Sig 2 - Samsung 840 Evo 250GB - 8GB Avexir Core White 1600Mhz - Corsair 750D w/ RGB LED Mod & Remote Control - 2x SP120 - 3x Enermax Cluster - 2TB Seagate SSHD - Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 - SuperFlower Leadex Gold 750W
