PS4 Cooling Issues?

HK6

Ever since Sony first showed the PS4, I have been wondering how they plan to cool the system. It clearly has a lot of ventilation on the rear, and a little bit on the sides, but is that enough? The console seems almost too thin to have a CPU-mounted fan, and even if it did, it would just be blowing against the side of the console. I am no cooling specialist, but it just seems like it might end up being a problem.

The PS3 had a single fan that cooled both the CPU and GPU.

that thing is like 10cm and its a blower fan (we have lots of dead ps3 fats in work).oh also xbox has same system 6-8cm ball bearing fan cooling down everything

i would say why take the risk ? just give it a beast overkill cooler since consoles never ran silent

Passive cooling? Maybe with a few small fans around the console?

Still probably better than the original Xbox 360's cooling. RROD here, RROD there, RROD everywhere. They really EA'd that one.

I'm fairly sure that they testet it to see if whatever they have, is enough :P

Just by guessing I'd assume there is an intake and exhaust on the back. The air will be channeled from one side to the other passing over the heat sinks. But until people open it up WHO KNOWS?? I wish they did open it up so we could have a look at it though see what the heat sinks look like.

The PS3 models also have more room to work with inside. I'm curious as to what size fan you could reasonably get into the new form factor.

My 360 Slim runs really quiet. Some tech sites have been saying that the Xbox One is even quieter.

Could work, but they would probably be smaller fans that would run at a higher RPM.

I'm fairly sure that they testet it to see if whatever they have, is enough :P

Laptops is even thinner, so I can only imagine that it have atleast a decent sized heatsink :)

I would really hope they have tested it. Very true. I don't think I know of a laptop with quite the same internals that doesn't run hot/loudly though.

Still probably better than the original Xbox 360's cooling. RROD here, RROD there, RROD everywhere. They really EA'd that one.

I don't think anything will be as bad as the original 360s. Whoever thought that this would be a good way to cool the system must have been doing something...

i also own and 360 slim and it gets hot(yes i know this one can run hotter than previous ones) even though i replaced thermal paste on cpu-gpu package with as5 after playing state of decay (which is hardcore on both cpu and gpu) the temps peak out at 65 degrees and fan running on %70 ,ps mine was banned on xbl so i rgh'ed it thats how i check the in game temps and fan speeds

It doesn't matter how you cool it, there will always be some braindead swaggot who will screw it up.

Yeah, which is part of my concern. A current-gen console with far lower specs than the PS4 or Xbox One is running hot with ventilation on the top, bottom, both sides, and the rear. I can't imagine what temperatures inside the PS4 will be like in normal situations, let alone in the heat of warmer environments.

but if it's intended as a Home Theater system, and is marketed as something that basically needs no maintenance....it shouldn't matter where you put it.....no maint. means it should just work.

the new consoles TDP should me moderately close to the first revision of the XB 360 and the PS3,because they both had ~210 watts power consumption.

the new console has a APU,which I bet will take ~170-200 watts.

why?the current APUs take 100 watts for an 8670D,it performs slightly below an Nvidia GT 640.

and the power consumption for the HD 7850 is 115 max.

so I would say that the cpu will probably take 65-95 watts, and the gpu will take 103-115.

I have an original xbox xenon and it still runs, i modified it to fit in a pc case which never happened but seriously the cooling design wasnt that bad (heatsinks needed to be bigger but whatever) and there wouldnt of been as many problems if the went through with thier first idea of mounting a 70mm fan as an intake (notice the 3 pin fan header?)

Im guessing (and if it was me) they will have a copper based circular heatsink over the apu around 110mm diameter with a 90mm impeller "blower" fan inside it taking air in from above and blowing it through a duct through the powersupply (like with the ps3) and out the back, air wil come in through the sides through a duct and be drawn into the impeller..

the other option is EXACTLY what they did with ps3slim with a blower blowing through a finned array (maybe with a heatpipe going to the 7790 gpu IF thats on  aseperate pcb...) and again air passing over the back..
If you have a good design that works you stick to it and now theyre all box's and have realised that the sloped domed thing is dumb they have more surface area on the back/sides the get airflow, xbox one will be exactly the same.

FWIW a very de-clocked and undervolted apu (im still wondering if the "8 core" thing is just a marketing twisting of definition) wont develop much heat, im guessing each machine will be around 150w from the wall gaming, maybe less..

I've maintained my Fat PS3, and more recently my Slim PS3 and i have to say the engineers at sony knows their stuff. The original PS3 was a massive blade heatsink connected by really long copper pies going all over the back of the system. It was really cool design but a bit large. Recently I replaced my Slim's thermal paste and i saw the heatsink shrink significantly with a standard fin array with both the gpu and cpu in close proximity sharing it with a copper heatpipe. what blew my mind was that the air being drawn into the array exhausted in only one direction through a compact power supply so that it would get airflow as well.

With PS4 coming out, i really think that they've managed to work some engineering magic to do something that would cool well being that the power supply is going to be internal.

I am now wondering If the Xbox one is going to have an internal or external power adapter. That was a huge perk to the PS3. Not that much bigger and only had to carry a cord and the system not a brick that stood out, on top of the large system that was super loud.

The ps2 only had 1 fan in the back(fat version) and it never overheated. But with the newer smaller form factor they may steal cooling methods from laptops like the MacBook air and other Ultrabooks. Another option would be to put in flat mounted fans attached to the top and bottom of the system to cool the overall components.

Does not having a second parenthesis around something bother anyone else as much as it does me? (Like if this statement was missing a second side)

PS3 slim heatsink was pretty small, and after I changed the thermal paste on mine, I could never hear the fan.

With the newer more power efficient chips, I don't think cooling should be a problem.
