Painting Keyboard

Robi_g

So I'm painting a Dell quietkey board, and was wondering if there was some trick to masking off text so that the job isn't so difficult and time consuming?

Not too fussed about the 'quietkey' text, but I'd like to keep the Dell logo showing.

(pic attached)

Thanks,

    Rob.

(will post pics of finished job tomorrow)

Its gonna take some serious taping skills to mask off that Dell logo, best thing to do would be to buy a metal sticker to put on after you are done.

It will look better and be easier to get done.

-snip-

Very interested in the after pics :D

Anyways, I don't have a concrete answer on it..

Maybe engraving the Dell part into the keyboard would look cool afterwards.

I might do that, it doesn't help that the masking tape I'm using was free from a garage because it had 'gone mouldy' (no where else was open so I have to make do)

get the clear packing tape and put several layers over it, then cut it out and spray. Then just remove the masking after. Using more than one tape layer for thickness will prevent the paint from tearing.

I would put a strip of tinfoil tape on a sheet of wax paper and pass it through your printer. Print the outline of a dell logo on it, cut os with an xacto knife and then you can put the tape on the keyboard. I have done logos like this before and they turn out quite nice. the end result looks like brushed aluminum (because it essentially is)

Wanted to keep it retro, hence the green.

Since the photos, I've cleaned up the paint around the stickers, the dodgy masking tape didn't do its job properly.

The smudge next to the Esc key is because of a fly.
