Long time lurker, first time poster here..

Alright guys, as a grown man I'm not afraid to admit that I'm honestly on the verge of tears. My computer has been everything to me ever since I built it, and I'm afraid if either the psu or the motherboard is broken, I won't have enough cash to replace it.

So I was using my pc as usual and suddenly everything froze.... I waited for a bit but it was completely frozen so I pressed the restart button... As I do this I notice the screen doesn't come on anymore, and it turns out the pc turns on, I can see the cpu fan turning for around 5-7 seconds.. Then the pc turns off... And then it starts again... And does the same thing repeatedly until I turn off the psu...

Any idea what could be wrong?

Could be an issue with the build. Reset your cmos by taking out the little round battery on the motherboard. It looks like a watch battery, then put it back in and reboot. Keep the system off entirely and unplugged while you do this. Make sure also to dispell any static you have by grabbing a fridge or something.

Yep, sometimes it's located under your GPU.  Pop it out, wait 20 seconds and pop it back in.  Make sure to have the power off and unplugged.  This should clear your problem.

System specs? If you were overclocking it could be an instability. Sometimes they just don't like staying stable suddenly.

Try resetting as was suggested earlier and keep things at stock. Monitor your temps and if it happens again update us.

@Kando Just in case he didn't follow his own topics since nobody quoted him as well.

There, that'll help. I think.

Hey guys thanks for all the replies.

I removed all connected devices including the power, removed the cmos battery.... Held the power button on for a good 30 seconds to dispell any remaining power from the system.... Put the cmos back in and booted up however there is no change to the situation sadly :(

Explain the issue in more detail.

Specs? Year of buy? Could be a defected CPU?

It also could be out of incompatibility of the BIOS..

See.. You can do a paper clip test with the PSU.. Look it up at YouTube on how to do it.. If your PSU starts up (make sure not to touch the paper clip) if it does it's not the PSU.

Your monitor posts? Not the GPU.

Your PC shuts off? Memory error probably, reseat RAM or try each stick one by one see if you can atleasy reach to the BIOS..

Etc.. And if you are a grown man, don't fear.. You probably still have warranty, so relax..

P.S. It also could be a hard drive failure.. Just saying. See if you can reach the bios.

Hey sorry, meant to post specs before but forgot...

i5 3470 @ stock clock

Gigabyte H77-Ds3h

Sapphire Radon HD 7850 2Gb

6 GB RAM (4X1 AND 2X1)

Things I've tried :

Resetting CMOS by removing the battery

Trying with only one stick of ram trying each one

Also there are no sounds as far as I can tell... Just turns on, all the fans start turning... And after a while switches off... Waits around 3 second and turns on again

No warranty on any of the items other than ram :(

Thanks for all the help thus far

i suspect the ram but to test that you need some other ram that is verifiyed it works and put it in

I tried it even without ram to try and get into the bios.... No cigar.

I'll remove the psu today and try the psu test.

Btw I removed all the peripherals some time ago.. Today I plugged in the keyboard however in the short time the pc turns on... No keyboard led lights come on? Does it take time for the keyboard led lights to come on? Or?

I plugged in my headphones and those lights come on fine even when the computer is not on as it usually does

@Atmos @Poster @ApolloX75 @Samfisher @adman29 @MagnesiumPC @StareX @Arcanekitten @watts300

So I did the recommended thing and unplugged everything from the mobo and power supply (it's modular)

Only things connected were

Cpu fan connected to motherboard

Motherboard connected to power supply

Motherboard cpu fan slot connected to power supply

And all the case things (case Fan, front audio etc) were connected

I removed all ram sticks as well...

Same thing occur... Infinite restart loop :(

Also I did the psu test... Psu runs fine indefinitely.

Yikes. Bad motherboard is a distinct possibility then.

Have you tried assembling the system outside of the case on a box? Sometimes running it outside of the case can give you a new perspective.

Hmmm... I'll keep thinking on this one.

I'll give that a try tonight then... Building on top of a box is safe yes? Without stand offs and whatnot the mobo would have direct contact with the box.

Thanks :)

Direct contact with the box would be fine as long as it's not conductive (motherboard boxes shouldn't be) :)
