Nitrogen Gas Phase Change system 2002 Rebuild

Hey Modders, I built this rig in 2002 and ran it solid for about 5 years.  I had to storage it for the last few years, but I just started a rebuild.  I got amazing temps from it and so far everything is stable and very reliable. I'll try to add a brief description of the build.

 

The most of the build sits inside a PVC pipe, I pump Nitrogen gas in to displace the regular air and to get rid of the moister content inside.  I also have a few desiccant packs inside to help minimized any moister build up through any small cracks or holes I have in the containment. Once I do a purge I start up the phase change, it takes about 10minutes to get it to my operating temperature. The phase change is on a threshold of between -3c and +12c.  I’ll end up tweaking that eventually to -5c to +10c.  But need to ensure I can displace the heat properly.  As a side note the evaporator goes to -15c in order to move the heat and get to these temps.  The hard drives and power supply all live outside the containment.  I have a 120mm AC fan that circulates the chilled nitrogen within the containment.

The phase change cycle is about 5minutes on and then 10-15minutes off depending on the load.

 

I approached a professional company to help me get the evaporator and the motor properly installed. 

 

The current system I have in it is the following. Please note I had to cheap out on the ram and use an existing graphics card.  I plan to upgrade both in the near future.

Nvidia GTX 660

 

The whole rig runs well, dipping the CPU, motherboard, ram and video card below -0 at idle. I’ll try to do some overclocking right away in the next few weeks see what I can achieve. One of the best features is no dust build up so the system is pretty clean with very little maintenance or upkeep. Every now and then I replenish the Nitrogen Gas to displace the air.

The total cost for the unit was around $3000, not including the computer system. As for how loud it is, it's like having a fridge running in the background not really that loud.
