GTX 960 vs R9 285

tamag901

Hi,

Which GPU is better for 1080p gaming? I'm looking at mostly raw performance. I will be overlocking these cards, though.

Thanks

Well they are both very similar in performance, but the 960 should overclock like crazy because it runs so cool and you have a lot of head-room.

Really it shouldn't make too much of a difference though.

R9 285 all the way.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

I3 4150, Intel HD graphics, corsair CX750M, 4gb ram, Asus H81M-E, corsair 230T, Intel stock cooler WD Green 2TB Gigabyte 550TI

Why you shouldn't trust Gpu or Cpu boss Click on this I dare you!

Neither. 280X.

I would, however, it seems that here in the Far East where I'm staying, shops appear to be phasing out 290s and 280s in anticipation of the 300 series. Only the R7s, R9 285, GTX 700, 900 and Titan Xs remain.

At stock they are pretty much equal. However when overclocked, an OC'd 960 will beat out an OC'd 285, Maxwell overclocks like crazy.

CPU: G3258 @ 4GHz GPU: Gigabyte GTX 960 OC RAM: 8GB G.Skill DDR3 1600 SSD: Corsair LS 120GB Case: Antec GX500 Mouse: Logitech G402 Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow Headphones: Shure SRH440 Microphone: That Zalman Zm-Mic1 that everyone recommends but noone uses

Remember when the R9 280 was the HD 7950? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Since the 960 is faster overclocked, should I get the 4GB GTX 960 and overclock to heck out of it?

4GB 960 is arguably not worth it because of the 280X at that price, but if you are set on the 960, then I'd pay the extra $ for 4GB.

Its not that I'm set on it; I'm just not willing to go on a wild goose chase for 280 series cards. If an overclocked GTX 960 is faster than an overclocked 285, then I'll go for the 960 since they are almost the same price. (Where I'm staying, a 4GB 960 Strix is cheaper than a 2GB R9 285 Strix card.)

Anyway, an overclocked 960 should be able to make use of that larger frame buffer, right?

Yeah, a 960 will be awesome and overclock like crazy.
