Hello,

After a topic where I asked if Tor can still be considered secure (resounding No from the community), I began to wonder, is anonymity even possible anymore?

Really the only way I can think of is using Tails via flash drive on a laptop using wifi in places like coffee shops. Even then I find it doubtful if specifically targeted that it will work.

Is anonymity even possible online anymore? What tools/methods would you use to accomplish this? What if you aren't specifically targeted?

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

If the NSA and Google stalking you counts as "not-anonymous" then I don't believe you can be anonymous on the internet anymore. You can create fake accounts and usernames and avoid Google and Facebook all you want, including using VPNs and Tor, but, to some degree, you're not anonymous on the internet.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Pretty much my sentiments in a nut shell.

Anonymity was never really a thing. It was just the lie that was pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.

Meh, I think it was, just very briefly before agencies found way to exploit/bypass the various methods used.

I tend to use 'soup' for everyhting but there are a couple of occasions when I have had to use my real details.

I suppose someone COULD connect all the dots and find out who I am, where I am etc etc etc but what would be the point ?

So although I am pretty much anonymous I could be found but why would anyone bother?

To this end I have ticked the "to a degree" option, i.e yes to a n00b but not to anyone with sufficient skill/time/want.

TOR I have sort of heard off, 'The Onion Router' yeah? But I have never used it, never had the desire too.  No idea what TAILS is.

Hence the furry option.

  • 2 weeks later...

Anonymity wasn't possible before the internet.

Depends who you wish to remain anonymous from, give the OP was talking about TOR I'm guess he meant his government, rather than Google. Without even touching a computer, unless you go to extraordinary lengths to go 'off grid', your government, knows where you live, where you work or study, how much you earn, who your relatives are. If they take a particular interest in you they can follow you, intercept phone calls, view your bank account activity, or indeed search your home with varying degrees of needing a warrant. Before we even get to CCTV cameras.

Just relax, yes Google uses the information it has on you to target advertisements at you, and someone at the NSA knows what you did in front of your webcam Saturday night, it's the price we pay for the convenience of the internet. Honestly 99% of us are far too dull for the authorities to pay any attention to.

Its more an issue of what they do when you, the average person, starts actively trying to get people to pay attention to those things, and trying to change the government. With them having access to every aspect of your life, it makes discredit campaigns super easy.

They did that before the internet anyway, undercover police infiltration of environmental campaign groups for example. If you want to change the government, form a political party, if you want to bring something big to people attention find a journalist sympathetic to your cause to work with.

Anyway what the hell are you doing online that would make it easy to discredit you?

Any little comment that any one of use has probably made at least ten times. Imagine what would happen if it came out that Obama, Hillary Clinton, Rand Paul, or any other major political candidate, got caught saying something along the lines of "the general american population are about as intelligent as a plank of wood". That's about all it would take with the way the media behaves.

Hell, a guy lost a promising presidential campaign for being a bit too excited and shouting "YEAAAHHH!!".
