Poll! When people ask you how much they should spend on a custom build what price do you give them?

ThisIsMyWorkAccount

Title mostly. I get asked often what people should pay for parts for a custom build, just curious what the community would say.

the person in question would probably have a topic something like:

"Hello Linus Teck Tips forum! Sorry if this is the wrong section but im new and loojing at building my own Desktop PC. I have a mouse/keyboard/screen/headphones, and mic. So all I need is the tower.  I want to play the latest games like Bf4 and gtav.  Want to spend as liitle as possible!

SORRRRRYYYY AGAIN IF THIS IS THE WRONG SECTION!"

EDIT: Assume they are in the USA, so American dollars and prices.

$800 with a used GPU and a cpu/mono/ram combo is my go-to suggestion.

To PLAY the games without necessarily maxing them out, 500$ is what I would say. 400 are enough but you'd be making compromises I don't necessarily recommend.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I'd say $1000 with $1500 at the most for a rig that isn't false economy.

I feel like $800-900 is the gaming sweet spot for 1080p/maybe 1440p

If its just for office work I think $550 or so is good.

I generally use tomshardware's sbm and then go a little lower because I deal hunt and generally can build a better system for less money. Do, around $600 if I really try and $800 if I don't.

800 since is the peak of the performance vs price curve so to speak, but I try to sell an upgrade path if that is not an option.

EDIT: In fact 3dmark fire strike game me a nice visual representation of the top of said curve, afterwards it makes less and less sense to spend more and more for less performance:

Same here, upgrade path is more important than initial price. (which means no FM2+ right about now *shots fired*)

Either as little as you need to or as much as you want to...to be honest, assuming you make sensible choices, there's really no in-between. :0/

I would say $1000, but compared to how everyone doesn't include the monitor and the OS, I'll say $800.

About $800, that seems to be where the bang-for-the-buck sweet spot is.

i5 and what ever the best $200~ GPU is out at the time.

$1,000 if they want an SSD and a bit better GPU.
