Yet another GTA V thread - high CPU usage help?

Go to solution Solved by Badger906,

my i5 2500k doesnt struggle at all! no micro stutter for me. as soon as i saw the title i thought tom myself OP must have a 970.. its a 970 issue, theres thousands of people complaining about similar issues.

So you can see my specs in my siggy. I think it's safe to say my processor, at least, is good enough to easily handle this game. Unfortunately, I've been suffering bad microstuttering in GTA V and I'm certain it's due to my CPU usage. Whenever I play, I'm fluctuating around 90-100% CPU usage... I've looked around the internet as much as I could but I can't find much. I've set GTA V's priority to high, lowered population density, etc... nothing helps it. There has to be other people with this kind of problem, but does anyone have an answer? I feel like I've tried everything I can.

gta5 is a cpu and vram hog, simple as that.

buy an i7 (or xeon e3 1230)

or go amd

gta5 system usage very high R9 270

also i think gta5 has a soft 60fps cap as i seem to stay there with low gpu usage unless i run 4xmsaa (which isnt exacly a problem as i do anyway) though sometimes i can get 80+fps, this would explain the 5960x "bottlenecks", its not cpu's being dragged down, its rockstar trying to limit it to 60fps to prevent physics issues (im guessing)

Yup, you should OC your CPU if you can. From what I could tell with the earliest benchmarks available with the highest end graphics configs they were being bottlenecked by an overclocked 5960x.

Sig under construction.

You can see my CPU cooler in my specs, it's just air-cooled. What would a safe OC be and how would I do that?

That's one weird cooler...

Go into the BIOS and up the voltage slightly and up the CPU multiplier slightly?

What temps are you running at with full load normally?

Um I get between 80-100fps.........

@dima_ have you got a retail version? You need the latest update for the launcher to stop being a bitch.

Alright, I'll refrain from OC'ing, then. And no, I got it through Steam. I realize the launcher isn't taking up as much as it used to.

Yup, but if you can OC to the point where you're not being bottlenecked by the CPU and you're still at safe temps, then the stuttering shouldn't be as frequent.

Tedster logic.

Fair point, worth a try if you have custom.

4.4GHz won't hurt anything.

not sure why people are getting these problems my fx 8350 only uses around 50%-60% and its not even that good of a cpu any more i also get around 60fps have you had a look at what else is running in the background

yeah even as an fx6 i was only around 60%

gta5 Fx6 7770 1080p high 45fps

but who cares because an i3 outperforms us by 2fps right? (with all 4 threads pinned at 100%)

overclocking should help a little as the cpu can get more work done in a given time and therefore cpu usage will go down, but even going from 3.9 to 4.4ghz (10%oc) will only get it from 98% usage down to 90%ish.

what we really need is all the game to be single threaded so we can all get g3258's with our gpu's hovering around 20% running nice and cool. no games use more than 4 cores anyway.

don't get it confused with the vram issue though. people are reporting the issues when using way less than 3.5gb vram. its a general issue I think. the next nvidia patch should iron it out.

I was playing yesterday and used the msi statistics thingymejigajigyy thing lol.
I seen that most of the time all 4 cores where pretty much 97-100% usage and gpu was 97% not sure if this is a good thing or not, but apparently the patch they released a few days ago was supposed to reduce cpu usage.

Check what processes are running and kill anything that's unnecessary. Make sure chrome isn't running in the background either, it's a bit of a resource hog.

Was seeing 80-100% usage on my i5-4570 as well. So maybe it's just a CPU-heavy game. There is a lot of AI and physics going on so it's somewhat understandable. Also not too surprising to see the FX 8-core CPUs running well since it was initially developed for the consoles running 8 very weak cores - they basically HAD to optimize for high core-count to make it run well enough on those devices.

My i7-4790 is at 65-80% (mostly over 75%) in free roam and races and at 40-60% when playing sports or not so demanding missions.

I don't like when my CPU is used that much (its psychological issue, I'm little uncomfortable when all my cores are used over 75%)

I run two monitors and twitch/YouTube all the time so I still have to test and see how the things are with single monitor and no background applications. But who has the time when u want to play the game :D (I don't have any performance issues, normal-high setttings, 760 2GB is too weak)
