Why do people hate Alienware?

ReaverM1

While building a pc is wiser I own an Alienware 17 r5 before egpu dock and let me be the first to tell you it's fast. Definitely over priced but well worth it for the non soldered versions. I have 2 generation to upgrade all components you would in a desktop minus not having m.2 or newer Ethernet card. People  that can't afford it will talk crap and that which can will tell you its not a waste. Clevo/Sager might be $50-100 cheaper when selecting same parts. Where Alienware  messed up by is soldering parts egpu makes up for it slightly. P.S. I'm overclocked almost benching stock gtx 980 desktop benchmarks with single 980m copper cooled.

It's the desktops most of us have a problem with. I do, however, direct you to search the many many threads we have on this subject.

The projects never end in my line of work.

i think one of the whole reasons to build a custom pc is to actually BUILD it. so when people go and spend $1500 on a pc, they arent learning anything about it. the kind of person who buys an alien ware is the kind of person who doesn't know how to fix it when it breaks.

  1. It's prebuild systems. Prebuild systems are NEVER good for gamers. Get a "boutique" builder, a tech friend or just anything. But prebuild systems are not good for future upgrade-ability.
  2. I've heard from a friend that their OS's are modified. Some things you cannot change. Even though this may be for the best, I wouldn't want to pay 2000$ on a gaming rig and than hearing it tell me what to do.

One thing Alienware IS doing right though, is their Console-PC's. I think this can definitely become a thing. It would be cool if, if your PC-console couldn't run a game anymore, you could just take it to your local tech shop and that they upgrade it for you. I really hope that stuff kicks in!

Basic guide to CPU's!

If I said I were 14, you would call me a kid. If I say 70, you’ll entitle me too old. If I say 20 you say I’m inexperienced and if I say 40 than I'm too boring.

Big and bulky, overpriced, non-competitive specs, and lastly (and most importantly), they are owned and made by DELL. I absolutely hate DELL with a passion. Mostly because of the absolute joke of a customer service department. That, and most consumer grade devices have the build quality of a plastic water bottle. Some very, very select high-end models are nice, and their PowerEdge servers are fairly good, but overall, the company is meh at most.

Back in the early to mid 2000s, Alienware was one of the only computer companies that made decent looking cases. Cases were all pretty box-like for the most part, and Alienware was one of the first to have something sleek and vaguely reminiscent of what the Cosmos II enclosure accomplishes today. As a result, while it was expensive, people still begrudgingly bought it. Nowadays, its cases are nothing special, and a lot of other companies have caught up or/and surpassed case design.

In addition, their laptops look like total garbage. It's almost embarrassing how ugly and fat their laptops are, and this mostly shows that Alienware is not particularly a company that pushes the boundaries of engineering or good design. Coupled with its price, and components not even close to offerings by companies such as Falcon Northwest, it gets a lot of hate. Also, it's a little more mainstream, which is why people hate on it more. More people know about Beats by Dre or Justin Bieber, so even if they're not as bad as something else, they still get the bulk of the hate.

So much hate for Alienware.

Sounds like some haven't tried them before passing judgement.

I personally have had off shelf desktops and laptops as well as custom desktops.

My M17x R4 shits on all of them. I boosted the hard disks size thats all.

I run Eve online and all my other games at Max settings without ANY issues, high frame rates, fast response, never had one issue at all!

Agreed on the heavy side how ever, but what do you expect from large chunks of copper....

I have a GTX 780Ti and a i7 875k overclocked to 4.2GHz 32GB of ddr3 ram clocked at 2100MHz and PCI storage so I know what fast a computer looks like. BTW built by myself liquid cooling closed loop push configuration to avoid lots of dust. Due to be upgraded to gtx titan x and i7 5960x all water cooled and over clocked ddr4 3200MHz with samsung m.2 pci storage with 10gb Ethernet. so I'm not talking desktop. I have back problems from being in the military and I'm very mobile. I'm also a content creator. So definitely talking mobile power house without getting into enterprise level. Love gaming and video editing.

It's the stupid desktops. their laptops are overprice, and not perfect, but I own one and I'd own one again if given to me. Never would buy it now that they did away with hdmi input.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I like their laptops, especially the looks of one from a few generations ago. They look nice, are slightly expensive, and have a certain feel weird or unique feel to them. I do not like how the general public makes generalizations on PC gaming from them or that they are experts. But I would actually consider their laptops. I think people also have a reaction to things that are popular( like Razer, which is not 100% bad). I would rather save or build for desktops, but I guess they fit some people.
