windows restore deactivated windows license

As it says in the title I restored a laptop and now it is not activated anymore and the key that was with it wont work. I have tried undoing the restore but it didn't activate it. How do i activate it again without buying a new key.

I can think of 2 options

 

1. Look on the bottom of the notebook, see if there's a serial number there.

2. Call the manufacturer.
