How is this camera?

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx50_hs

The Canon Powershot SX50HS.

My dad is looking to buy a new camera, since the one he has now is acting up. Dead pixels and stuff.

Anyways, he wanted to buy a Canon camera (he is the most familiar with the buttons and stuff) and he found this one in his price rage.

Anyone have some feedback on it?

Does anyone know if this camera has a panorama feature?

The camera will be used for mostly daylight stuff. Maybe just a bit of lower light situations. Not anything in particular.

Sony and Fuji are worth a look, they are making some great products at the moment (eg a full frame sensor Sony A7 should be great for low light but is quite a bit out of budget)

I also started a poll on good compacts on massdrop if he's willing to wait for the results he could get a good deal.

Thanks for the site, the reviews seem the be mostly (very) positive.

I am not that good with camera stuff, so was hoping to get some feedback on the camera from other forum members who understand what my dad needs :P

He said he didn't really want anything other than Canon, because he has been very happy with their products. We looked in stores at some similarly priced Sony cameras, but were not impressed.

Is a bridge necessary? does he need that insane amount of zoom? I am really not a fan of them, they are generally slow performers with mediocre image quality, as well as being big and heavy like a DSLR

What about something like an RX100 or a Nikon 1? with their 1" sensors

Or even a sony A5000 with its APSC sensor - basically a DSLR

Heck you can get a 1200D for that price

Canon EOS M? with the updated firmware is an ok performer

That camera is meh for the price. Will he be doing lots of videos? This thing kinda sucks for videos but pictures are ok. The Canon T5 would be a much better camera. Idk if he'll know how to use it.

What is a bridge? I don't know a lot of cameras.. :(

I talked to a guy in the store about digital vs. DSLR. I heard some stuff and asked him "if you always have the camera on Auto, is the DSLR actually worth it over a digital camera?"

He said, probably not :P

And yeah, he really wanted that much optical zoom, since we often go hiking/walking on vacation on go on high mountains and stuff and he wants to zoom in a lot.

Pretty much 97% picture and every now and again video. Pictures are the main focus. What do you mean by that you don't know if he knows how to use it??

A bridge camera, is basically a compact camera, with a big lens - its meant to "bridge" the gap between compact and DSLR cameras - also called superzooms sometimes

The problem with that camera is, the image quality is no different to a cheap canon pocket camera, bit with a stupid amount of zoom on it

Honestly 50x zoom is impossible to use hand held anyway and generally for landscape shots you want to be shooting with a wide angle, not zooming in to random trees and such

I mean most pro photographers have like a 70-200mm (which is like 5x zoom)

NOW

Even shooting auto there is a benefit to shooting with a DSLR -.

1-  better low light, due its bigger sensor

2- better image quality

3-  better depth of field

4 - can upgrade the lens

And if he wants to learn a bit more about photography he has the option to

its really his choice, I can only give my opinion and advice

He is looking into digital pocket like cameras, will he know how to use a Canon t5, a dslr? The t5 would 10times better for the same price.

I greatly appreciate your advice.

Pretty sure he has this camera now:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Stabilized-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B000EMWBV0

He said he did not want anything with a huge lens, because he already (still) has a camera pouch and carries it around in a bag with more stuff.

I am not sure what kind of camera that is what he has now, but he has the ability to change some stuff on it already.

Enough for him to be honest (he can change stuff like shutter speed and how much light should be captured.. I don't know a lot about cameras, but this camera has enough customization in changing settings).

I will tell him about the other options that are available.

Thanks.

Ok if he wants something small, try and persuade him to look at the Sony RX100 - possible one of the BEST compact cameras on the market - if he shoots automatic, there is nothing to learn other than the "on" button and "shutter" button

if he HAS HAS HAS to stay canon, look into the G16

other good enthusiast compacts are good too, like @ShadowCaptain says the Rx100 series, or panasonic lx100, fujifilm x30, or if you really want the zoom then panasonic fz1000 is a good choice
