Is the intel core i7 5820k worth it?

So i want to build my own pc and i want to buy an i7 processor. But which one do you recommend? The intel core i7 5820k or the intel core i7 4770k or 4790k?

Greetings,

Youri

I7 5820K. This is based solely on your request "I want to buy an I7 processor". Is it worth it? Will be stronger than the best of Skylake, when not counting with Skylake E or Broadwell E if it ever exists.

For gaming an i5 is good enough.

i7 5820K mostly used by content creators, Because of the number of cores.

Intel Core i3 2100 @ 3.10GHz - Intel Stock Cooler - Zotac Geforce GT 610 2GB Synergy Edition

Intel DH61WW - Corsair® Value Select 4GBx1 DDR3 1600 MHz - Antec BP-300P PSU

WD Green 1TB - Seagate 2.5" HDD 1TB - Seagate Barracuda 500GB - Antec X1 E.

You should be good for 2-3 years or more with the 4970k, and it actually preforms better in most games becasue there isn't much that uses more than 4 cores and the 4970 has a faster base clock. The 5820k would be better for content creation, but unless you really want faster render times at the expense of, well, expense, then go for the 4970k. Also note that you will have to buy a more expensive motherboard and a lot more expensive ram to go with the 5820k. And if you plan on doing SLI or crossfire, the 4970k has more PCI-E lanes than the 5820k.

I've been looking into this for my next upgrade, and I would go with the 4970k for gaming and a small amount of content creation. The 5820k is just too new and expensive to be that great right now, and for me the lack of PCI-E lanes was the dealbreaker, since I plan on crossfiring some r9 290's.

Edit: changed all instances of 79 to 97, my mistake.

2-3 years? There are still people playing current games on maxed settings with the damn 2500k. OP: You'll be more than fine for ~5, if not more, years, with the 4790k.

Are you on crack? The 5820k has 28, the 4790k has 16.

Thats true, I guess I tend to upgrade more than needed and I didn't want to say '5 years' and then be really wrong. Could happen.

What are you using your computer for?

Oh I see now.

You should be good with an i5

But like others are saying i7 is really future proof.

5820 is probably major overkill for what you are going to use it for.

5820 does require a more expensive Motherboard as well, so you will be spending a lot more $$$ than you have to.

honestly 4790k is overkill, but it's an amazing CPU, so it's totally worth. :P

4790K is an improved 4770k...pair the 4790K with Z97 chipset motherboards.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |

Thank you!but why are they the same price? is there a reason behind it? and also, want to pair it with the Asus z97 Pro Gamer. is that a good motherboard?

4770K is going out of stock and end of life, that's why...i don't know why they do that...but often times you can get good deals on Z87 + 4770K combo's in store...Z87 chipset board are also usualy cheaper.

But the 4790K is more stable for overclocking and run's a few degrees cooler...it's worth it.

I'm one of those people xD

I have an r9 290x stock and a I5-2500k at 4.4ghz

I'm going to be making the switch finally to an i7-4790k purely because I want to start streaming and the i5-2500k can't handle both streaming and playing games at the same time.

I'll be handing down the old board / i5-2500k and my power supply to my older brother though because he wants to start gaming on a PC and I told him I would build him a PC if he set aside around $400 to buy a GPU / Case / SSD / RAM

For OP: If you do not plan on streaming / pumping out youtube videos or doing gaming / rendering at the same time then a i5 would do just fine. If you do want to create content tho and stream while gaming the i7 is an excellent choice and I'm super excited for my upgrade to it.

my 2 cents on the intel lineup

i personally would always have it over an i7K, (and if i didnt have a k edition i7 id just get a xeon).

its allot more cpu for not much more cash even if you factor in ddr4

cpu market

plus the 5820k has allot more pcie lanes than the z97 platform

Yea 4790k will overclock better, and run cooler. Like Nano said, it's worth it.

There's no such thing as future proofing.

If you want to spend the money on an insane 6 to 8 core intel processor, no ones stopping you. But gaming and most applications utilize fewer, faster cores. The i7 4790k @ 4.0Ghz stock is an insane processor (I have it personally) and it doesn't cost a ridiculous amount. You can even get an i5 and overclock the shit out of it, saving even more money and not losing very much.

I'd say go for the 4790k and use the rest of the money on a GPU, since more expensive GPU's make more of a difference than more cores on a processor.
