FAA gives Amazon the OK to conduct drone tests

amazon-prime-air-drone.jpg?itok=b7J7vw68

Amazon huffed and puffed and they managed to get FAA approval for their drone fleet to be tested on US soil, near their existing RD facility.

I think drone deliveries are just inevitable, why not get ahead of the curve and start the testing now to refine the flight controllers and the GPS tech so that deliveries can actually be made in a manner that makes sense.

After threatening to take its drone tests elsewhere, the FAA granted the online retailer permission to test its unmanned aircraft. If you'll recall, Bezos & Co. weren't interested in leveraging any of the government-approved test sites for drone trials, wanting instead to fly near its Seattle R&D facility. The "experimental airworthiness certificate" awarded today allows Amazon to make test flights at 400 feet or below, so long as the unmanned aircraft stays within the pilot's sight.

Seriously, drones require a human pilot, a low ceiling, and must remain within line-of-sight... Talk about the 1865 red flag act deja vu. This is incredibly disappointing and really shows how these archaic heavy handed regulatory bodies stifle innovation in favor of invested interest group monopolies no matter what the industry.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I believe it's actually 250ft. the father of my ex girlfriend in highschool actually filed a grievance with a small local airport because all the ultra-light enthusiasts were flying too low over his house on landing approach, and he actually ended up forcing them to re-route traffic or something.

Not sure about that 100%, he's a bigger nutjob survivalist than I am.

Wikipedia says it's actually up to 500ft with exceptions around airports in the US. Wonder where the ~80ft came from. One site mentioned that the U.S. government was looking at reducing the height to allow for drones though. In the future the 80ft thing might be close to the truth.

I guess it's not really something to be worried about as far as privacy goes, with these giant ass spy blimps they're putting up
