IP.Board theme went away?

and the search funcition is part of how the forum displays content like you subscriptions, so you can use that direct link I gave if you want to use it.,

yah, something like that. Unfortunately what they fail to realize is that every forum function almost is done via the search. Every time I load my subscriptions or other thread lists, it does a search. So the load they removed was very very minimal.

Moved one of my projects from mysql to firebird db: the entire load was reduced by ~50% (also used IPB + some partner's sites).

No, what you fail to realise is that some search functions put more load on the server that others, and actually searching is particularly bad. It also causes some other issues with the back end.

I'll click on shit and use the search function 100 times before I search in the box maybe once. I doubt the average user uses it very much unless you are specifically trying to cause a load, and a lot of forums require a captcha to search for this reason. A single keyword search may put a lot of load on the server in comparison to a simple search which only searches the properties of the thread (like reply count or followed), but how many times do you think people use that? Not much, it's not part of browsing the forum in most cases, and as long as the frequency is limited, it shouldn't be a problem like it used to be.  

I think the thing I failed to take into account is when something like a giveaway happens since LTT likes to have spam accounts created on its own forum for that, and a bunch of people must use it. Aside from that, I really would in most cases doubt removing the search makes much of a difference. Never did on vBulletin or phpbb for me at least. I would be totally wrong to treat every search query the same though, and I guess I don't truly know how many searches are done on a tech forum with people trying to troubleshoot, but I assumed most of that was done on google.

I understand that it can be really useful, and it doen't seem like it can do much harm, but please trust me in the fact that if it didn't make much difference to the server load etc, it would be enabled again. The admins have decided that the benefits of having it disabled outweigh not having an amazing search function at the moment, although I have personally found that the Google search works well for most cases. I'm not going to stop you from using the advanced search function, but we won't be implementing the search back until it has been optimised, which is planned for IPB4.

I'm also thinking about making something to force text to not be dark for nigh theme users so I can stop hearing bitching about not using automatic text color when people have pasted stuff.
