Don't get GTX 970 SLI, vram would be an issue AND 290/290X performs better in general

Get R9 290/290X Crossfire. Performs the same for wayyy less

Ignore Zappian. She trolls every incarnation of this thread that appears.

970 SLI and 980 SLI perform similarly. Obviously 980 is slightly better, but it's also a lot more expensive. 290X Crossfire is also very good for this. It performs on par with the 970 SLI, with the actual victor being very dependant on the specific games you're playing and generally the difference in performance between the two is only a few FPS anyway. My advice would be to go with whichever is cheapest for you out of 970 SLI and 290X crossfire.

Don't bother with 8GB vram. It's unnecessary, and by the time you actually need that much vram you won't be happy with either 290Xs or a 970s at any rate.

Personally I think an R9 295x2 is currently bar none the best solution for high end 4k gaming. It hits the exact comfort zone between cost, performance, convenience and silence. That said 2 970s are also a good option and if you want to spare some money, 2 290Xs will be just as great in terms of performance (albeit at the cost of noise and heat). I would stay away from: 980s (overpriced), 8gb 290Xs (overpriced and don't provide tangible benefits yet), 3-way whatever (more hassles than gains).

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I see.

Like @Sauron mentioned the 295x2 is the best solution for 4k gaming right now provided you have a decent psu.

For AAA titles, two 290(x)'s/295x2 would be a good choice (could go 970's if you want, but for 4k 290(x)'s are generally a better value). If you don't play very demanding games you can easily get away with a single 970/290(x).

The 290x CF/ 295x2 would be better but since the 390x is "rumored" to come with 8GB HBM, I'd wait for those to come.

If rumors are correct, 290x x2/295x2 will perform quite a bit better than a 390x for cheaper (there's no way in hell the 390x is going to be less than $600), and I doubt a single 390x is going to be able to drive modern AAA titles at ultra settings 4k 60fps. I think the 390x will only be worth it for crossfire setups (since two will likely be able to max out AAA titles at 4k, and currently you need 3-4 cards for that), but we'll see :)

Yea but HBM though  ;)

And since we're talking about 4K, might as well go all out

Trolling = ignoring months of evidence from various benchmarks that contradict your misconceptions and obstinately parroting the same AMD-biased fan-rubbish.

Like I said the R9 295x2 does marginally better in some specific circumstances, and the 970s to better in some other specific circumstances, and either way the difference is slight. Get whatever is cheaper, or whichever your psu can handle.

Because this question is asked so often, I made a chart comparing relative performance of more recent flagship graphic cards compared to the GTX 980. As you can see, the 295x2 makes a very strong case for 4K when you take into account multi-GPU scaling, at least until R9 390x and the GM200 flagship launch. clearly frame buffer is is important too.

Imagine though: if AMD can stroll in and slap a 400$ price tag on the 390x the 980 and 970 get thrown right out of the market unless they slice prices like there's no tomorrow. It would be a smart move by AMD and they have shown that they're willing to sacrifice margins to make sure their cards remain great value for the money. It my be their opportunity to flip the table and get closer to having 50% or more of the marketshare.
