Dell Precision 490 Workstation

Hey guys

 

My school has an old Dell Precision 490 workstation and they wanted to throw it away. I read about it here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/emea/products/precn/precn_490_uk.pdfand its pretty decent. My school says that they dont need and would be happy to give it to me. i looked at it, and saw that it had a Xeon!!! Isn't that a top of the line processor? Should i salvage the CPU (xeon) or throw the whole hunk of junk out?

Why not just use the whole thing? And if it's free, HELL YEAH TAKE IT. The Xeon will be comparable to a decent Core 2 Duo.

I'd keep it, the Precision 490's are pretty well built, just sneak it in or something

sneaking in a mid tower isnt as easy as you think _-_

never say no to free shit, you can always throw it out later but you can't decide to take it once the offer has passed.

 

Also mod the case.

That's a bit of a step-up from my old PC. It was/is a 390 and it was a beast....sort-of.

Tell her that you need it for a project, the old computers are not powerful enough.

Instead of taking the whole thing, i am just taking the innards and sneaking them part by part, until the whole PC is in my house! just deformed. I cant bring the case but i am going to put it back together without a case :3

Also the offers not up until the end of the school year

Take it. It's free. You could turn it into a router or NAS or something...It's a bit overkill for that, but it's not really worth parting out

That might be a good idea, but its gonna forever to put everything back into the case...
