Hi. I am looking for some help on a topic. I’m writing a research paper on the different effects of video games (whether they be physical, psychological, social, or cultural) for my Composition class. I’m looking to get some feedback, about real gamers’ (new and old), and possibly even some developers’ view on gaming. So. If you don’t mind, just respond however you’d like to the following questions.

  • What is the biggest impact or change gaming has made in your life?

  • What got you into gaming, and what kept you interested?

  • What specific genres and games do you enjoy the most?

  • What sets video games apart from other arguably similar activities (table-top games and sports)?

  • What do you look forward to most in your gaming experiences?

  • How often do you game with friends? (Do you view gaming with friends online as a real social interaction?)

  • How do you feel about violence in video games, and the general controversy that surrounds them?

  • Do you ever prioritize gaming over more important activities? Would you ever describe yourself (or some of those around you) as addicted?

  • What do you love about gaming communities? What do you hate about some of them?

  • Should we encourage children to play video games?

  • Do video games have a legitimate spot in the future for other purposes than entertainment? (Education or training for example.)

Those are just a bunch of ideas. Don’t feel compelled to answer all of them. Just answer any of them you find personally important, and give any other additional information that you might find relevant. Thanks a lot.

  • What is the biggest impact or change gaming has made in your life?

Loss of exercise, thats why I stopped.

  • What got you into gaming, and what kept you interested?

Playing with friends, together, having fun, and forgetting school.

  • What specific genres and games do you enjoy the most?

MMO, and Wot

  • What sets video games apart from other arguably similar activities (table-top games and sports)?

Electronic, no exercise, and relax.

  • What do you look forward to most in your gaming experiences?

Relaxing, and enjoying my time.

  • How often do you game with friends? (Do you view gaming with friends online as a real social interaction?)

A completely fake social interaction, but most of the time with friends.

  • How do you feel about violence in video games, and the general controversy that surrounds them?

I can tell you that violent games, make people more violent. I've experienced it myself.

  • Do you ever prioritize gaming over more important activities? Would you ever describe yourself (or some of those around you) as addicted?

I try not to, but its naturally addicting. My cousin is addicted, so yes.

  • What do you love about gaming communities? What do you hate about some of them?

I hate them mostly, a group where people with mostly no social life become more comfortable in a fake social environment.

  • Should we encourage children to play video games?

I wouldn't encourage me kids to, if I had any, its a bad addicting habit.

  • Do video games have a legitimate spot in the future for other purposes than entertainment? (Education or training for example.)

For driving/flying simulators, nothing else really.

1) Gaming has made me more familiar with weapons, but has led to be a waste of time. It has, though, helped my hand-eye coordination and strategical skills.

2) I only really play battlefield, which is what got me into PC gaming. I enjoy the realistic weapons and vehicles. Before, I played on the GameBoy, started because my friends used them.

3) These days, war games on the PC and strategy/puzzle games on the phone.

4) They are more dynamic. I can release stress in GTA or BF in ways that I cant in Monopoly.

5) I look forward to it becoming a more realistic experience.

6) Rarely, as my friends are obsessed with indie games and me? Not so much.

7) I love them, and they have made me less violent in reality because I can release my violent stress in games.

8) Prioritize them over school work. Then again, shoolwork comes last for me. Addicted? Only when I'm achievement hunting.

9) Love: A big group that shares the same feelings about a game/platform. Hate: Trolls and fanboys.

10) No. I wont let my kid near elcetronics until they're at least 10. They are fun, but NOWHERE near necessary or good for young kids.

11) Meh, the only applications I can see are for strategy for troops trainging for war. For school? Not really.

Hi. I am looking for some help on a topic. I’m writing a research paper on the different effects of video games (whether they be physical, psychological, social, or cultural) for

1. Well it taught me some life lessons to some extent, Rachet and Clank being one, just because your friend is different or even strange, they will be your best friend and cover your back as you will to them.

2. Hmm my father and me playing old final fantasy games together, it was just so amazing the world of final fantasy to magic to the badass music at times

3. hmm doesn't really matter to me, just games that get my attention, or games that other people play, and I find it kinda cool and try to play it

4. Video games are an art if done correctly, look at the Sly Cooper series, the animation and visuals were homages to the old classic cartoons with everything colorful and with everything popping out.

5. Maybe some funny and strange jokes and a good story.

6. ehhh I play mostly single games and me and my friend all have different consoles so its hard to play online anymore.

7. This one seriously pisses me off, really video games make people violent ? really ? What about movies that are hella violent like The Expendables that movie is nothing but killing people and you don't see anyone making a big issue about that......I just think its because movie companies have enough money to deal with stuff like that.

8. personally its up to you who you want to be, some people have the urge and can control it, I am one of those chaps

9. How we can come together and piece together the lore of certain series and find out the story of the game and maybe some cool theories

10. Hell yea ! it increases your motor skills and helps you focus on multiple things at once, there are studies that prove this.

11. Yea why not, we are more prone to learning something if it's fun, if it's boring and we don't care about it then we won't ever try to learn it.

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT

I would like to answer the last question if I don't mind

I think there is a potential for video games to have a role in treatment of neurological disorders, like how Chess and other mind teasing games have. With the right idea and the development process, it can help people to reduce probability of aforementioned disorders. In fact, video games are researched as an alternative treatment for Attention Deficit (Hyperactive) Disorders (ADD/ADHD). It'll be interesting to see more research done into this.

  • Do video games have a legitimate spot in the future for other purposes than entertainment? (Education or training for example.)

- Erm, well I can't compare my current life to what my life would be like without playing video games, so that question is out for me.

- I got into gaming so long ago that I can't remember what it was, and I was kept interested as video games help kill time, and when playing the right video game it makes me feel more alive.

- I enjoy action/adventure games most, for the most part, open world games are what I prefer, and also like them to have good gameplay to go along with the open world.

- Video games are set apart from other "Similar" activities for me as I tend to play video games alone, or with a group of friends, whereas for something such as a card game you really have no other option than to play with friends/family, and the overall experience between the two are quite different, card games typically include a bit of social interaction, whereas video games normally don't include social interaction.

- In my gaming experiences, I find that I prefer it when games are more realistic, and don't always have to be with friends, every now and then it is nice for the option to be there, though I don't always want to play with friends too. I wouldn't consider gaming to be a "real" social interaction as most of the time, you are not anywhere near the people you are playing with (lan parties and such are an exception), and I feel that a real social interaction would be face to face instead of two people at computers playing a game together.

- I prefer games that have violence in them compared to those that don't, it allows me a way to get my anger or frustration out without letting it out on other people or objects. I find that people over react about violence in video games, violence and such that is typically in the news is arguably no better than that in video games, and the controversy about violent video games corrupting peoples minds is stupid to me, if people paid attention to the ratings of games for once and prevented kids that shouldn't be playing that game from playing it, then there would be many many fewer issues with it.

- I sometimes prioritize gaming over more important activities such as homework, though typically that is in efforts of procrastination. Could I be considered as addicted? Nah, I could quit video games any time that I want, I just chose not to as I tend to have a huge amount of free time that I am too lazy to do something else with.

- I haven't been around many gaming communities, though do know that some of them are great, full of helpful, kind people, though there are some communities out there that are full of hateful jackass trolls which I personally dislike.

- Not really, with all the movement towards more and more technology, kids are not going outside and playing nearly as much as they did when I was a kid (I'm talking like 6-10 ish range, and I'm nearly 16), and from what I've seen that has had some pretty negative impacts on them, that along with all these dumbass troll squeaker kids that go around playing games and ruining the experience for those of us who are older and more mature, I'm not saying that they shouldn't be allowed to play video games, I'm just saying that they shouldn't be pushed to play them.

- Yes, video games have a very legitimate spot in the future for other purposes than entertainment, there are many different purposes for current games, things such as driving simulators can be used to help improve driving skills (if the simulator is at least half decent, and the user has a steering wheel and such that has been calibrated to be accurate with the game), and with the huge amount of effort going into virtual reality, it may also be used for things such as combat training and such in the future.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

What is the biggest impact or change gaming has made in your life?

I think it help enable me to be social without being social.  Good/bad with that.

What got you into gaming?

My parents.

What kept you interested?

Many things kept me interested.  One is wanting to reclaim my youth.  I am 42 and still game now.

What specific genres and games do you play the most?

Sports (NHL 15 EA Sports on Xbox 360), shooters (TitanFall, Borderlands), puzzle/action (The Ball, BIT.TRIP.Runner)

What sets video games apart from other arguably similar activities? (table top games and sports)

I can actually do something and have it take care of the rules.  This is why I like video games vs board games.  I have a Strat-O-Matic baseball board game and I can't play it on Master Edition Rules or whatever whereas with a video game like Strat-O-Matic pc game it takes care of everything.
I also like NHL 15 because while I am not the best at it at least I get to play hockey whereas in real life I can't because my skating is so poor.

What do I look forward to most in my gaming experiences?

With NHL 15 seeing things that are done in the NHL recreated in the video game.  I also look forward to challenging puzzles in games like The Ball.  It is nice to be able to use my mind for something challenging for once.

How often do you game with friends?

I have no real life friends and that saddens me.  I would love to game with people in my home or wherever.  I have reached out on LTT to play with people and had a few times where I played with people but not enough of that yet.

How do you feel about violence in video games and the controversy surrounding them?

I think I could picture a world with no violent video games and having it be a better world for it.  I play these sort of games at times but I could live without them if they were banned.

Do you ever prioritize video gaming over more important activities?

Yes.  For sure I have done this.  I have felt video gaming addiction where I had to be home to raid and was doing that instead of taking care of some real life matters that I could have pushed myself harder to do.  In fact the money I spent on WOW could have been better spent on counselling possibly.
I also video game right now in NHL hardcore not only cuz I love it but because I don't want to deal with the reality that I just can't get myself to go to school and so I stay up all sorts of crazy hours playing this game to hide from the day when things get done.

What do you love about gaming communities?  What do you hate about them?

If a gaming community helps me get to play dead-like MPer games then I love them.  What I hate about them is that there are none locally and we don't have LAN parties.

Should we encourage kids to play video games?

As long as the content is appropriate for their age allow it but allow it in moderation.  I failed at doing this with my son and he is no longer with me partly for that reason.  Long story but not going to explain it.

Do video games have a legitimate spot in the future for other purpose other than entertainment?

I guess you develop good hand eye coordination and other brain function crap from playing them so yeah they serve a purpose.  Also honestly some games make me laugh and that is always healthy.  When I saw my son play Octodad: Dadliest Catch he laughed his head off.  That is healthy gaming.

.. and last question you forgot to ask ....

Is PhysX awesome?

YES!

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

  • What is the biggest impact or change gaming has made in your life? Allowed me to meet new people of sorts, and just let me relax.

  • What got you into gaming, and what kept you interested? Friends, excitement, and an escape from daily stress.

  • What specific genres and games do you enjoy the most? I'm open to almost anything.

  • What sets video games apart from other arguably similar activities (table-top games and sports)? Non physical, not as physically social.

  • What do you look forward to most in your gaming experiences? Laughing, having fun with friends, and just escaping.

  • How often do you game with friends? (Do you view gaming with friends online as a real social interaction?) Most weeknights (when I'm not working), weekend days (or evenings if I work). Pretty much just days/nights I'm home. I don't think it's near to the same level as in person, but in a way it's a social interaction.

  • How do you feel about violence in video games, and the general controversy that surrounds them? Violent video games don't make people violent IMO. It's the person itself.

  • Do you ever prioritize gaming over more important activities? Would you ever describe yourself (or some of those around you) as addicted? No. If something needs to be done, I get it done (I might procrastinate general things that need to be done for a bit). I would rather go out with friends than play video games, or go snowboard (for the most part), than game. I don't think I'm addicted, but I know plenty of people who are.

  • What do you love about gaming communities? What do you hate about some of them? The community, and the community.

  • Should we encourage children to play video games? Not encourage, but we should introduce it to them safely, and monitor them while they use them. With restrictions, etc.

  • Do video games have a legitimate spot in the future for other purposes than entertainment? (Education or training for example.) I know military's etc, use VBS2 for different things, so I think it has a purpose.
