The 3.5" hard disk drive has been around for years and years, but are SSDs killing them already? No, they aren't. SSDs are getting cheaper, but are still far too expensive to use as primary storage. Hard drives are fast enough for me, and that's why I don't run SSDs in my system, but some people might think otherwise. I'm tired of people saying that hard drives are "dead" because of SSDs, because hard drives are still the primary storage unit in most every PC in the world. And they're dirt cheap too. This can be placed with when the hard drive first released, for nearly 20 more years, floppy drives were still in most computers.

just wait a bit. SSDs are dropping hard in price. for mass storage yeah hard drives, but realistically, the fast majority of people need less then a 512gigs. only us techies or people who store movies use more, and we are moving more and more to cloud storage.

My pc is running just a ssd.

Yea, most of us know this. SSDs will out perform and out price HDDs one day.

I usually have just an SSD in my computers and then just use my NAS network storage for the rest, HDDs are still used everywhere, they aren't being replaced anytime soon for sure.

Pointless thread is pointless.

Hard Drives are far from dead, though SSDs are becoming a better and better choice when you want fast storage.

I'm not moving more towards cloud storage, I prefer to keep all my data safe on my PC. (or on a NAS once I manage to get the money for one and have done some upgrades to my rig)

Not for everybody, I don't have a hard drive in my laptop or desktop.

whoops. relized that was poorly worded. I meant us techies are the ones staying with hard drives and mass storage, the majority of people (normal I guess lol) are just fine with a sub 500 gig hard drive, and just cloud storage. realistically people dont use much storage unless they are a gamer, or keep movies/vast music storage.

for the average consumer, a 256 gig SSD is more then enough. my pc is running 100% fine off of that right now, and just that. I only have games I play, and I have some movies on this. and guess what? its fine.

I personally keep all my data locally, unless its things for school. We have a 8 tb server right now, and about to upgrade. but thats very unusual, and not necessary for everyone. I honestly think in 3 years, besides for Mass storage, hard drives will be dead. in 5? possibly completly replaced. the 850s are dropping hard in price. let alone what it will do in a few years. if flash gets cheaper then hard drives, there is no reason to stick to hard drives

I am currently using 400GB on my 1TB HDD, then another 200GB across another 750GB drive and a 500GB drive used to windows 10, server stuff, and videos for my youtube channel.

..our 8 tbs are nearly full. has like 300 gigs free. and thats not including my sisters 4 TBs of full movie storage.

thats for mass movies, music, and family pictures. we average a couple hundred pictures a day on vacations. Last time we went camping, it was just under 2K pictures for a one week vacation. that adds up fast.

Im not a very good example for my example

Hey FairladyZ,

It is true that some people consider HDDs as an obsolete technology, but in fact due to the price per GB and ability to recover data from them as well as their ability to store data longer without being used enable the to still be the dominant product used by corporations and regular users. SSDs are great bootable drives and deliver superb performance, but I would never use a SSD to store important data for a longer term (photos, music, movies, important files) as the charges in the NAND cells degrade over time and SSDs are very susceptible to static electricity. :)
