Hi, since my brother is all about the Intel/nVidia game now, I asked him if he can trade the one I have for something more "nVidia" and more powerful for when I mod minecraft. I asked him if I could try one of his R9 290X and he told me that games would perform more poorly than the 270X. He said a pretty good card for around the same price as the 270X is the GTX 680 although he isnt as sure.

290X is better than 270X, you're brother is being a troll..

The 680 is kind of just as good as the 270X, but uses quite a bit of power, as it's an older card.

I would suggest looking in at the 960, maybe a cheap 770.

I did tell him the 290X is better than the 270X but wouldn't there be bottleneck? I was using that system before and put a GTX 970 with the A8-6600k and the results were around the same, some frames also dropped a bit in some games. I just didn't bother explaining to him why.

a 290x will shit on a 680 on everything don't listen to him he's just a fan boy. Buy what fit your needed and budget not according to brand,

Fan boy of? I have both AMD & Intel. I never said nVidia or AMD is better in any of my posts, he thinks this because I went from that system to a full Intel/nVidia build.

Found him a 680 for around 130 bucks with a waterblock, will rip it off and put another cooler. Still get a 960 or wot.

A 680 performs as fast as a 280x. The gtx 770 is basically a rebranded 680.

It is haha. They almost always seem to specialise at the high end. Also I've kind of realised that I'm like a grammar Nazi when it comes to GPU performance haha. You could say I'm a GPU nazi haha.

It sounds like your brother doesn't know what he's talking about.. Or he doesn't want you using his hardware.

Most of the knowledge I've gained is from here, This has probably been a hobby for 5 months. I'm running 290X's in Crossfire, for the monitor I'm using on it, its overkill, NCIX had it onsale for 250$ a piece and couldn't justify not getting them. If you would like to brighten my knowledge, I'm more than happy to learn from you. Can we exchange numbers?

I'm still not very good at PC parts.

Realized the 770 was a rereleased 680 after posting..

A 960 would cost 300+ after taxes, although a 280x goes for 150 used.

280X is mostly better than the 960, sometimes the 960 is barely better.

The 960 costs in my country 220, while the 280X is ~210 euros.
