970 SLI for Gaming?

Luhan

So its that time again, My old 720p square monitor has died, and i'm looking to make the switch to the 1440P. For the upcoming Asus IPS 1440p monitor. Current hardware is 4790K with a R9 270. I was just wondering if a single 8 GB R9 290X can handle it, or will 2x 970 be better for driving it? 980 is kind of out of question considering the price for 2 lol.

Edit: This is for lots of editing, and a AAA gaming most of the latest titles

I believe 2 X-Fire 290 could drive it, though, not at max out settings.

A single 8GB 290X should do fine. The 290X excels at higher res.

Getting a single R9 290x 8gb model(Preferibly a Vapor-x) would last for a longer time, Games WILL use more and more Vram, 3.3gb wont last for a long time.
And you will also be able to add more monitors as you see fit.

Well isn't DX12 stacking VRAM anyways? I don't see the should be a issue, in the future of course.

i havent even thought about the r9 series. i'm not lookin to max out at 1440p just at very high settings or high settings. could 2x r9 290 drive it?

so a single r9 290x 8 gb can drive it? so since the resolution is high, you'll use a lot of vram, is that why you usually need 2 cards to drive a 1440p or higher monitor?

If you check out the deal section there is a pretty good deal on 295X2 under "[uS Newegg] Sapphire 295x2 $699 + 100 Gift Card" that might suit your needs.

Single 290X you won't notice the difference between 4GB and 8GB at 1440p but once you add a second one, given that VRAM stacking isn't exactly confirmed for DX12 yet, 8GB cards will be a better idea

I've got a swift 1440p & my 980 drives it fine on ultra setting just don't use AA which eats up VRAM

The reason why one adds more GPU's is to get more processing power, The Vram doesnt stack, thats why cards like the R9 295x2 only can use 4gb of Vram even when it is advertized to have 8gb.

For just a single 1440p monitor right now it would be enough with a regular 290 4gb model, But as i said, games will use more and more Vram so it wont last for a long time.

It is more for the graphical effects than the textures.

As someone who HAS 1440p and 2 970s, you most certainly don't need anywhere near 8GB of vram.

It'll be perfectly fine, 1 970 can actually drive most games at medium/high & ultra on some at 1440p, two just gives you basically guaranteed playability at 1440p 60+ FPS in 90% of games.

Pretty much same question as the OP. But I'm already 1 foot through the door.

I already have a MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G that is water cooled with a EK waterblock. I was planning to get another by summer. I am currently in the process of purchasing a 1440 or a 4K monitor (the new Acer Predator XB270HU looks awesome though). Should I stick with my current plan and get another 970 or should I cut my loss and sell my 970? Is this card with the ram issue gonna cause problems down the road? Thanks for the help peeps.
