Best method to mail a PC

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

The CPU heatsink and any graphics cards must be removed from the motherboard prior to shipping. Fill the inside of the case with air bags or something, and wrap the outside with bubble wrap before putting it in the box.

Here is a good example of safe shipping:

obviously he cant take the GPUs out from the watercooling loop, so he needs to pack them very tightly

Hi everyone,

I have a PC that I built two years ago that I don't really need anymore. I've been meaning to get it off my hands and was planning on selling it online. If I were to go this route, that would mean I would have to mail it out. I don't really know the best way I would do this. I know a box would be necessary, but how would I pack it? I imagine bubblewrap would be good, but I could be wrong. Also, I don't really plan on doing it piece by piece either since I no longer have the original packaging for the hardware. Can anyone help me out? It would be much appreciated!

Pink bubblewrap is usually anti-static. Stuff it with that but don't be forceful. Secure heavy items and delicate ones by removing and packing them separately in the same box, such as the HDD and possibly the CPU cooler or GPU.

Just use Craigslist/Kijiji and give it to people in person.

If you want to be really snazzy you could always put it in a crate

Haha I don't think that would be necessary.

Kijiji is canadian Craigslist.

As for Craigslist, make sure to make the trade in a public space and you should be fine. Also, ask for ID so you know their name.

You're welcome, and good luck!

The easiest way is to sell it locally so you can make sure it gets to the person in one piece, but you can usually find higher bidders on the internet worldwide.

Also, a bit off topic, but how much would I benefit off of selling it whole vs part by part? This is another method that I don't plan on doing, but would still like to know their worth since these parts are outdated by today's standards. Below are the parts that are currently in use.

Case-HAF 922

Mobo-ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0

CPU-FX-6300

Cooler-CM Hyper 212 EVO

GPU-ASUS GTX 670 DirectCUII

RAM-Corsair Vengeance 8gb 1600DDR3

SSD-Samsung EVO 840 120gb

HDD-Toshiba 1TB

PSU-Corsair CX 500M

I'll try to find a person first before resorting to online auctioning, thanks again!

I'd rather play it safe and use closed cell foam because you're pretty much shipping about 50lb of sensitive stuff that you don't want to risk damaging. I don't think newspaper and brown paper would be sufficient compared to foam because you can easily flatten paper, whereas foam is more solid and also has a bit more give so that it can cushion it and reduce the impact force when UPS or whatever tosses it around. The brown paper vs foam thing is also one of the reason people prefer to shop from Newegg rather than Tigerdirect.

I see, closed cell foam it is! Where would be the best place for me to get this?
