Australian meta data laws confusing.

It seems even our government is confused by it's own data retention plans.  Turnbull claims only ip's are to be logged and not web surfing history. This after Brandis said surfing history would be recorded.

I still feel this is a step in the wrong direction. Not because I don't like them spying, but because they refuse to accept that the internet is as much a privacy right as mail and phone.  They also won't consider the public opinion on the matter and still pull out that old chestnut about saving the children.

I note the hypocrisy of Bill shorten, who's worried about press freedom after his party tried to threaten the press with commissions and inquiries for reporting on government failings and lies.  And that's not to mention Conroy's internet censorship laws *shudder*.

Only IP addresses - the number assigned to individual computers - and "traditional" telephone records already kept by some telcos for more than two years, such as the caller, the call party, the time and duration of call, will be sought.

"Metadata and its retention is more important than ever if we are going to be able to track what criminals are doing, whether it be criminals who want to commit terrorist offences, whether it be criminals who are committing corporate offences, whether it be people who are committing child abuse offences,’’ Mr Abbott said.

just use a vpn that was my solution

It's not just about privacy (although using a vpn could be construed as hiding something leading to probable cause) there is also the increased cost of internet because of said data retention laws.

After the whole "We now grant ourselves access to any computer anywhere, because they're all part of the same network via the Internet, because we need to be able to stop ISIS/Terrorists" thing, I think I'm just going to move to Canada.
We're at a tipping point for the future of the freedom of use and privacy of access on the Internet, and Australia has decided that it's voting for a completely controlled and monitored Internet that has no freedom whatsoever. I mean, I'm infuriated, but I feel like even if the entire Australian people make it known that they're not happy, the government is just going to be all "This is what Australia needs, even if the public doesn't realise it yet.".
Yeah. Fuck this shit. Moving to Canada. Or somewhere in Europe. Or just anywhere that isn't Australia, the US or the UK.

decent ones also cost money, why should we pay more for privacy that  we should already be entitled to as a human right?

Because the option isn't their unless money is involved I'd rather be able to pay for my piracy instead of not having it at all.

I'm sorry but what?

Are you honestly trying to say that you'd rather pay a vpn company because you've been denied a basic human right solely in order to  pirate stuff?

Sorry but if that's what you're trying to say then that is all kinds of messed up.

1. Your privacy should be guaranteed as a human right, not something you have to pay a 3rd party for.

2. You're in the u.k,  access to content is hardly limited or so overpriced that piracy is justified.
