Homework Question

Go to solution Solved by Jaybird,

255.255.255.0

I am doing some homework, and I'm stuck on a single question. I've looked through the relevant chapters but can't figure it out.

The question is "which is the default subnet mask value for the addresses whose first octet ranges from 192 to 223?"

Possible answers:

255.255.0.0

255.255.255.0

255.0.0.0

254.255.0.0

I want to say the answer is the last one, but I'm not entirely sure. If someone could explain how to find the correct answer I would appreciate it, book is not exactly clear.

Edit: I now think the answer is 255.255.255.0 due to an image in the book where the IPv4 Address is 192.168.1.36, and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, am I correct?

Why did you think it's the last one ?? what made you rule out the others ??

255.255.255.0 is the right answer.

Honestly I just guessed. The book doesn't really outright tell you how to determine the answer.

255.255.255.0 is the right answer.

How do you determine that from the numbers alone? The book doesn't really explain it all that well and I'm trying to understand it.'

FML, previous chapter had a table for this. Sorry to bother you guys. You'd think the information relevant to an end of chapter quiz would be in that actual chapter, not the previous one.

As stated, the subnet corresponds to the class C set of IPs

Yeah, funny thing is this book says there are class A, B, C, D, and E IP addresses, but doesn't explain what any of them are.

Next question. If you assume the default mask, is that classful or classless sub-netting?

Can Anybody Link A Virtual Machine while I go download some RAM?
