Hi guys. I dont know which is better for me. Intel Core i5-4430 or AMD FX 8320. I am not into overclocking, maybe latter, but I am going to use it for gaming, photoshop, programming and other things. AMD is 40 euros cheaper. Please let me know which is better or maybe you have better suggestions in 200 euros range?

i5. Better upgrade path, usually better performance too.

EDIT: better performance in games that is.

The i5 will kick the FX-8xxx series' butt. It also offers an upgrade path to an i7. If you're looking into OC'ing, get a K-series chip (i.e. 4690K/4790K) and a Z97 mobo. If not OC'ing, this chip and a H81/B85/H97 board will do just fine.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

The i5 has stronger cores which are better than more cores for both gaming and most photoshop editing features (some rely on multi-threaded performance but from my experience, not many) also the 40euros extra you'd spend on the processor you will get back in motherboard cost, cpu cooler cost and energy bills cost of running an AMD FX processor...and as the other mentionned the i5 give you an upgrade path to better cpu's without having to replace the board if you feel you need more performance in the future.

The i5-4430 or i5-4440 (which ever is cheaper) can be run just fine on the cheapest motherboards available (H81 chipset for example...50$) where as the AMD FX chip require you to have a motherboard with good VRM's and a lot of power phase and those are not cheap (do not dare to run a 4 module FX chip on a cheapo 50$ motherboard, you'll melt the vrm's and kill the processor)

Implying €2 extra on your electric bill makes the costs improportional

as i said most of the cost difference is covered by the more expensive motherboard and the aftermarket cpu heatsink...and overtime this €2 extra will add up and make a nice little number after 2 or 3 years of using this processor.

nobody knows when skylake is going to release intel does not need to launch any new cpu's right now they have absolutely no competition right now and most likely what they will do is sit on haswell for a while and cash in on their investment, if the user need a working PC now...he can,t afford to wait years to get it!

Also the i7-4790K is still a 4.0Ghz and 4.4ghz boost chip that run's 8 thread...in itself it's more than a worthy upgrade to an i5-4430 for example...especialy if he can find one at good price in a year or two if he finds he need more performance....the worthy upgrade is already out there and this is a good thing.

Arrgh €6 over 3 years.

still worth mentionning...and from €40 more we are now at 34€...to that you have to add the motherboard cost difference which will end up being AT LEAST 20€ extra...and that left us with only 14€ to order a proper cpu cooling solution for this old beastly inneficient chip...which will end up being not enough so in the end the AMD FX option will cost him more and peforms less...that's the point.
