Haswell Refresh and Bios update

byubi

Hi, I'm picking parts for a friend for his next budget gaming PC, he lives in Canada.

At first I picked i3-4160 and MSI H81M-E33. Pcpartpicker displayed a compatibility note saying "Some Intel H81 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Haswell Refresh CPUs."

Knowing my friend (who is not exactly the tech-savvy type) he will not be able to do a Bios update.

So what should I do?
- Downgrade to i3-4130 (same price)
- Get a none H81 board that will work with the i3-4160 (which one? How much more will it cost?)
- Is there a way to tell FOR SURE if the board's Bios is already updated by the manufacturer?

Thank you in advance.

Do this. There is a chance that the board can come with refresh-compatible BIOS out of the box, but if you want to be 100% sure then just get a 4130. You won't notice the performance decrease.

There isn't a big performance difference between 4130 and 4160.

Get 4130. It's just fine.
