Hmm, if your cpu is still working I would personally think its something around the motherboard, can you check any of the (forgot what their called) capacitors and stuff and check if there are any burning marks.

well the capacitors look fine. however i had a bit of a problem installing the cooler on the cpu, it took me a few tries to fit the cooler properly so i had to adjust it a few time and because of the cooler i only could use one of the ram sticks.

take the cpu out, put it back in, and reinstall the cooler with new thermal paste.

 

the burning smell is most likely something on the mobo though, the magic white smoke is def not your friend

hmmm i guess i can try that

yep, and while you have the cpu out, check and see if you accidentally reversed any power cables. Like the 8-pin socket on the top of the mobo
