Asus GTX 970 Strix 63°C idle

Van Der Shah

Idle - 63°C

Full Load - 71°C

Why is it so hot when it's idle? When I crank up the fan speed to 100% it goes down to 46° from 63°

Do you have good airflow? Cuz... Those things are meant to run passive until 60C. @Darkman's stays under 30C most of the time, as I recall.

The Strix cards completely turn off their fans when it's idle. The result is that it will be completely noiseless, but it will let itself run a bit hotter as well.

It does not damage the card in any way to have it idle warm.

The 0 rpm fan mode on the strix turns off the fans at idle until the card reaches 65C

this is why it will be close to 65C at idle because its being passively cooled

if you disable the fan on any high end GPU it will just heat up a lot while idle because the heatsink is encased with a shroud and is getting no airflow.

No, I've literally only seen sub 40C idles on the strix, this is not normal

I think it depends on what you've been doing recently. If I boot up my PC from sitting overnight (and thus getting very cold), my Strix will stay close to 40 for a long time.. However, after playing games for a while (so both the card and the air inside the case would be hot) it will then start idling at 60.
