1TB Blues are usually ~$50-55.

Personally the WD brand is worth the extra $10, especially if it were a storage drive.

I just bought a laptop toshiba 1tb drive for 50$

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDK9QqIzhwk&feature=youtu.be&t=1m33s

They...are not reliable.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Not saying WD is the only good brand, just the only one I would trust storing my data on. Just like Intel, Samsung, and Crucial for SSD's.

Hmm, nice going on the Toshiba prices NewEgg :P I wish we had NewEgg UK, I mean, I can buy certain stuff from NewEgg in GBP, but there's the risk of overseas shipping, awkward RMA etc.

Seagate > all

I personally am WD, as there's a lot of claims of Seagate dying quickly. The only ever broken hard drive I've seen was Seagate, apart from 2 IBM, but they were old AF.

Can we just agree that everyone has different experiences with the same brands?

I've seen other people say the same stuff about the reliability of Seagate, Hitachi, and others still about WD.

So unless you want to buy a thousand more drives and make your statement hold any weight it will remain a grain of sand in the desert of inconsequential statements that I've accumulated over the years.

I've literally handled tens, probably almost 50 or more dead ones or dying ones from people thinking I can fix it. (So sad when I have to tell people, no I can't get you photos on that completely dead drive. ) I've had more than a few of my own die. Very few segate or WD drive in the same time.

(Laptop drives, not yet had a problem with toshiba desktop ones, but I don't see many)

I'm really not sure at this point if toshiba is that shitty or if it's just that they seem to be very common in low end laptops and best buy seems to use them exclusively as replacements, and the fact they are so common means I get more failures.

I also keep in mind ones that, if they  show up, have drops in their smart data. Very common. Hell had one girl (student I think) that had her laptop stolen and when she got a new one brought it into the bathroom area when she took a shower.

Do you think smart has a steam measurement? No, had I not known that, I would have had no idea why it failed other than them claiming there were no drops.

Despite all of this I bought a toshiba laptop hard drive for myself this week.

Because, yah know, balls.

As far as name brands go, I tend to be biased towords segate simply because I've had so many bad experiences with WD and good segate ones. Mainly reds. I know WD is a good brand, and it's likely just luck.

I know certian series of drives from certian makers tend to have problems. For example, I never really come across failed or failing WD blacks or greens, but man reds. Some of the high capacity reds die like lemmings it seems. Both segate and WD have hits and misses.

Another thing people don't consider is the way they are shipped. I usually get hard drives from a store like frys or best buy If I can for this reason. Never really had a problem personally.

I know they are shipped there too, but usually in larger quantities with other items that are hopefully handled better.

And I don't have to wait for shipping if it's DOA, mainly why i do it.

I've gotten drives from newegg and others that...just made me cringe. Not enough packaging, and not in the original manufacturers casing sometimes. Exposed to the cold and get condensation sometimes.

And we all know the shipping companies don't throw packages /s

I think a period of shocks and poor handling, even if it doesn't directly break the drive and make it doa, can cause the drive to fail within months.

I'd get Seagate over this stuff. Toshiba I've never really had issues with, but I still trust Seagate more.

this is probably the only place i'll hang out anymore: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/274320-the-long-awaited-car-thread/

Current Rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Abit IN9-32MAX nForce 680i board, Galaxy GT610 1GB DDR3 gpu, Cooler Master Mystique 632S Full ATX case, 1 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA and 1x200gb Maxtor SATA drives, 1 LG SATA DVD drive, Windows 10. All currently runs like shit :D
