What wattage do I need?

RevoltTrain

I was wondering what kind of wattage I would need to run the build in my signature with dual XFX R9 290 DD editions.

I have a feeling I'll need at least 1000 watts, but I want to be sure.

A quality 850W PSU will do the job, the EVGA G2 850W is perfect for this

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

850W with a overclocked 8350, can get away with 750W on Intel (i5's and 'low end' i7's).

You wanna run crossifer R9 290's with that cpu? Thats a terrible idea dude... I'd be suprised if that FX is able to drive one 290 to full potential!

BTW everybody in this thread cant read apparently.. hes talking about running DUAL R9 290 and a 750W sure as shit aint gonna cover that. A good 850W should do the job but is cutting it a little too close imo.

From anandtech:

Guru3d has 603 watts with a power hungry overclocked 3960x.

edit: Now that I look at it, that Guru3d seems a bit off. 3960x consumes way more power than 110 watts.

Huh... Seems low especially since each of those cards has a tdp of 275+W but oh well. Still completely pointless to run them with the FX tho.

TDP doesn't necessarily correlate to power consumption. And yea, it would be pointless to run two 290's at 1080p with an 8350 because it would bottleneck in the vast majority of games.

Saw this in their 290X review.. since the 290 only draws a little less power i thought that 750W may be a bit weak especially if hes gonna overclock.

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

  • AMD R9-290X - On your average system the card requires you to have a 550~600 Watt power supply unit.
  • AMD R9-290X Crossfire - On your average system the cards require you to have a 800 Watt power supply unit as minimum.

"We went from 860W on our overclocked Tri-X GPUs to a massive, unexpected 1050W. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the power meter ticking at 1050W, as this is something I would've expected from a 3-way CrossFire setup"

I would actually go for the 1000w because i would overclock both cards to the max

Holy shit how do they even consume that much power?  I don't understand overclocking sometimes. Add 10% more voltage, get 50% more power draw.

Yea if you're overclocking the 290's and 8350 you may want to go for that 1000 watts, but stock 290's and 8350 overclocked should be fine with an 850 watt PSU.
