Tech Things You Dont Know But Are Too Afraid To Ask.

You can put it in the last slot. I believe its 16x right? or get a USB soundcard

If my last slot is 16x that might be an ok sort of solution. An external sound card is a not so good solution. I want it in my case.

Maybe im just expecting too much :P

How does NAS work and what is it? I keep hearing Linus talking about it and it sounds super awesome but I don't get what it is. Is it like a huge storage system accessible by anyone connected to it or something?

A NAS is a small server unit with a few or lots of hard drives in it. It's used for streaming and storage. It's your own personal cloud. You can access it through the Internet or home network.

Is LGA really that good for Intel??

What do you mean? The socket? I like it better than AMd's because there are not pins on the CPU.

It's designed with Intel CPUs in mind. But you can run it on certain AMD based hardware.

wait they do the same thing don't they? amd and intel cpus? how do you make an os not work for one but still work for the other? <_<

Certain programs will not work on certain CPUs. Example: AMD Overdrive won't work on an Intel CPU.

why OSX won't run on an AMD cpu

Apple makes it illegal to run their OS on a non-Apple branded computer.  So, it is impossible to find drivers for OS X for normal hardware, like motherboards and things like that, because the companies don't bother to write them.  There is no point, they cannot support illegal activity.  So, since there are no AMD Apple computers, there are no OS X chipset drivers or CPU support for AMD chips.

There are a few older versions of OS X that can run on AMD but that is because some nut literally programmed his own support for AMD into the OS.  So it only works with the versions that he keeps doing it for, you cannot update until he finishes and you rely on him (and his followers) to keep coming out with these "legacy kernels".

They are the same on the surface, to us.  They are totally different at the programming level.  This is all transparent to us because it is all taken care of for us.  Software doesn't care about AMD or Intel, because it just needs to be compatible with Windows, and the OS kernel will take care of the communication between the software and hardware.  The OS, the kernel, is the intermediary step between the software and hardware.  But if you are programming the kernel itself... yes, you need to program specific support for AMD and Intel.

UK uses period as well:

$4.50

£4.50

but when using Euro's, such as in France, then they use a comma:

€4,50

It is not really a currency thing, rather a language rule.

Most European languages use a ' ' (space) to divide larger numbers and a ',' to divide the whole numbers from the decimals  (eg. 1 000 000,00).

In English and some other languages they use a ',' and a '.' (eg. 1,000,000.00).

Apple makes it illegal to run their OS on a non-Apple branded computer.

illegal isnt the correct word here

EULA

its reinforced in the US

but most parts of the world EULA is void  (ie not enforced by the law - not illegal )

and its not hard anymore to use AMD in ur hackintosh

Since the release of the first AMD kernel for Mac OS X 10.4.8, many AMD-users have been trying to Hackintosh their computers

Things got easier when Mac OS X 10.6 was released, when pro-AMD developer Nawcom released AMD-kernels and his ModCD.

and things got a lot easier when iatkos was made

its soo easy my grandmother could install one

Using software in violation of end user license = license is voided = using software with no license = infringement of copyright holder's exclusive rights = theft/piracy = illegal.

Or,

Using software in violation of end user license = breach of legally binding contract = illegal.

The EULA is a contract that you sign when you press the "I accept" button.  That's what the button is there for.

That is how it is in the US anyway.  Law in other countries varies of course but either way, the point is Apple's restrictions on the use of their software are the reason why companies don't create drivers/support for anything except what Apple uses in their own machines.

Totally agree. I forgot over around 1,000 we use a comma as a break point for spliting up the number, but at the decimal point or the break to pence, it switches to a '.'

Interestingly, that's what we did with 0's back when the idea of 0 of something didn't exist, or was hard to describe.

206 would look like 2 6 and the actual number of 0's would be a contextual thing based on the subject of conversation.

Math is fun. (Note: Got that info from a Numberphile video. I'd say it's a good source.)

SSD Caching... There was a tech quickie on it, but the details I still don't really get like how it works...

The most used files from your HDD get copied to your SSD, effectively speeding up your system without spending too much money.
