DDR3 starting to become obsolete?

Since the new Skylake will have support for DDR4 and x99 requires DDR4, how many years do you think DDR3 will last until we see DDR4 becoming mainstream? I am upgrading from a z77 to a z97 and I'm thinking of getting a x99 instead so I don't have to upgrade my RAM in the future. What are your suggestions?

1-2 years. DDR4 is still too expensive for the mainstream.

DDR4 is enthusiast grade. Ddr3 will late another year or 2

Not even DDR2 is lagging behind as long as you have 8GB (Which is really also the recommended minimum for DDR3) so it will be a VERY long time before DDR3 becomes obsolete and bad

yes true, but it is going slowly down in price. I expect in a year that DDR3 is going cheaper and DDR4 will be priced as DDR3 are priced now

Z77 to Z97 is not a big upgrade. I suggest you wait for Z107.

It still has a couple years left. But the jump from DDR3 to DDR4 won't even yield that much of a performance benefit. Hell, my netbook shipped with DDR2 @ 800MHz back in 2010-ish.

the benefit for us and the problem for DDR4 that DDR4 only grew in amount of ram on server grade boards. the amount of ram on regular boards are still the same as DDR3, this is a problem for DDR4 because it cannot grow so fast in popularity. Remember DDR2 on mainstream boards. It could handle max of 8 GB if i am correct, while DDR3 instantly grew to 16 GB and 24 GB etc... hugh improvement back then.

 

Now the amountation improvement is nothing.
