3 970's...

But you WILL need some sort of LGa 2011 FOR 3 WAY SLI...

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

3 way R9 290X is likely to give the best performance at 4K despite what others are saying the wider memory bus and faster onboard memory of the R9 290X makes it a perfect card for ultra HD and 4K rendering.

There you go to prove my point you have the R9 295X2 (which is what i would recommend you buy BTW) which is basicaly dual R9 290X GPU's on a single PCB outperform a GTX 970 SLI at 4K handily:

with 3 way the gap will only grow even bigger.

3 970's

I would say IMHO 970 3-Way Sli

3 970s or 2 980s

3 970's...

But you WILL need some sort of LGa 2011 FOR 3 WAY SLI...

2 980. 3 way sli doesn't scale well and most game won't benefit from the 3rd gpu (quite the opposite actually, you might get less fps).

google is your friend guys, you all got ZERO this time.

There is no 980 sli in those figures but dual 980s out performs dual 780tis so compare those to the 295x2 and its a much closer race. If you throw a third card in it will favor amd but that power consumption and heat is pretty intense.

Agree on this

However Q1 2015 will see HBM memory used on AMDs cards - this should provide a huge improvement for 4k setups so be wary of heavily investing in a platform at this moment in time.

Actually a GTX980 2way SLI beats a R9 295x2. But in terms of price to performance I´d go on a budget probably towards the R9 290X 3way solution.

A GTX980 3way SLI will be the fastest buy most expensive solution for each card is about 600 USD. But you´ll get away with a 1000W PSU (at least Bronze rated with 1 single 12V rail). In terms of a 3way R9 290X I´d go for a 1300+ Watts PSU just to have enough juice to power these cards.

My GTX980 2way SLI with my i7 5930K (140W TDP CPU) needs OCed balls to the wall in synthetic benchmarks a peak of 641W oow.

again if you check 4k benchmarks you would realise that the 780ti performs better than the 980 at such high resolution again due to wider memory bus and faster onboard memory, and still the 290x perform better than both nvidia gpus at 4k.

you have a point there son...an r9 295X2 is my recommendation for price to performance.

yeh, theyve gone far down in price as well, but why that over 2 980s?

wider memory bus of 512bit on the 295x2 will be faster than the 256bit memory bus on the 980s

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

yes as you crank up the resolution this become an important factor and in this regard the amd cards are better geared for 4k.

If you aren't in a hurry, it might be worth it to wait for the r9 390x if you are set on 4k since it is rumored to be substantially more powerful than the 980 while consuming roughly the same amount of power. The problem with that is theres no firm release date yet. I initially heard February to march of 2015 but who knows.

I agree with this, you should really wait for the 390x.

I'm willing to bet it'll destroy the 980 at 4k, and you'll likely be able to run a single one of these and max out just about every game if the rumors are true.

Also, you'll probably be able to get an affordable 4k IPS display by that time since the prices on 4k monitors are dropping like crazy every month.

RIP in pepperonis m8s
