what does at one point mean?

It means fully "at one point in time", or sometime undefined in the past. i.e. "At one point in time, I went to a party and passed out drunk"

 

No booze was consumed in the making of this post

At one point means that at a certain time, or point, something occurred, which is what the person is talking about. For example: "at one point in time Phil was a good footballer, but now he has retired he isn't at the same standard as before."

At one point means that at a certain time, or point, something occurred, which is what the person is talking about. For example: "at one point in time Phil was a good footballer, but now he has retired he isn't at the same standard as before."

They are both short versions of the same sentence "at one point in time" and for all intents and purposes are the same

It's a phrase that means "in a undetermined amount of time". It's a conditional phrase, usually used when talking about if something will happen.

Yep. Sorry, I just edited my post a second ago. Yep, in that phrase, it's just talking about time. :)

 

An example would be "at one point, I had to hold the umbrella sideways because the wind was so strong".

 

He seems to speak english just fine.

You may be able to speak English fine, but English has many words with the same spelling that mean different things. In this case, point could mean either to direct attention at something, a statement to be discussed/argued, or a sharp edge of an object.

 

To somebody learning another language, these sorts of words when used in common phrases are tricky to understand.

Only in THIS particular expression does "at one point" mean "at one time" it's very specific.
