Netflix Coming to Australia and New Zealand in March 2015

General_Pox

After speculation across the Australian media industry about the rumoured local launch of Netflix, the US-based movie and TV subscription streaming service announced it will launch in Australia and New Zealand in March 2015.

Members with a broadband connection will be able to watch any available program, when and where they like, on any Netflix-ready device they choose, the statement said. The service will initially be available on smart TVs, tablets, smartphones, computers and a range of internet-capable game consoles and set-top boxes.

Details of pricing ahead of the Australia and New Zealand launch have not yet been released.

Australian residents are currently blocked from accessing the US website, but it was estimated as many as 200,000 people were getting around the geoblock to sign up.

It's official! Now just waiting to see if we get screwed with the pricing.

they will have old season of GoT plus think of the savings on that vpn bill that could save you $10 a month so as long as its $19.95 it would be a good price if its unlimited stream.

shit im now thinking of my 500gb plan. time to email telstra get them to make a deal for undeterred usage.

Great news, but it will probably cost like $120 a month, and I already have Foxtel. And I bet the range of TV shows and movies will be really limited compared to the US...

Great, one more reason for the ISPs to up their price and start throttling content.

yup especially since optus and telstra have there own sorta thing.

also the speeds we get will mean we have to watch it in 480p while the rest of the world is watching 4k

Its all about those volumetric clouds

I currently watch Netflix in 1080p. However, it would be nice to have better speeds to watch in 4K once I get my 4K TV :(

Unless they just give us a clone of US netflix I'm just going to stick with a VPN and US netflix it's the only netflix worth a damn.

Currently you can, provided you have a netflix account from anywhere in the world, switch to any netflix region by changing your VPN region. I use Canadian and US netflix myself with a US account. I have gone on the British netflix also, there is some different stuff on the different regions. If you check out moreflicks you can see what there is on all the versions of netflix.

Australian netflix might have some good Australian shows, or maybe other shows that are available here but not elsewhere due to licensing.

I don't believe a "good Australian show" exists. I'll just stick with the VPN and US netflix even if it ends up being a little more expensive.

I'm ashamed to admit NZ might actually be ahead of Australia in this one regard..... Unless someone can correct me with a small ISP that offers this type of thing.

We've got around 10% or so of people with access to Global mode, all our ISP's have an unlimted option and we're getting a pretty big push for FTTP. in the regards to internet in general we seem to be ahead.

Love your name btw

Nice and here we are with our NBN suspended all work stopped because of our lame ass liberal party thinking our current old copper infrastructure is good enough... If it keeps up I guess I'll be packing the boat and heading your way.

I remain hopeful, however I hope we don't have a situation where our content is based on Australian release dates or Channel 9 already has exclusive content licence on all [insert] shows/movies so Netflix Australia cannot show them, if this happens guys who's gonna stay on the US server?

Also I "should" have NBN in the next month or two... if NBN co. would stop pushing it back the role out for Inner north Brisbane, work was ment to have finished in Q3 for my area.
