do anyone know where i can get 99% rubbing alcohol i try in my local drug store there only 70% im living in montreal

umm, I got Exact Isopropyl alcohol 99%USP. I think I got either from Walmart, or Superstore (or any other Loblaw owned store)

I got a bottle off of Amazon for 7 bucks.

 

I don't know how Amazon Canada is, though.

Look in Shoppers Drug Mart, Metro, Loblaws, or Sobeys

Standard rubbing alcohol is all you need. The only different is that you MIGHT use a bit more rubbing alcohol.. like you'll just do an extra cleaning step in the removal of thermal paste compared to 99%.

Just buy Ethanol or Bacardi 151.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

Its illegal to go over 60% in the Uk i think. We were not even allowed to make proper Ethanol in a science coursework. The police were also watching us incase anyone tried to drink it.

Do you know anyone in research in academic or industry?
Very easy to get very pure isopropanol and they litres of it.

 

99.7% isopropanol in our chemistry labs.

There is a way of 'drying' it if you can't find 99% isopropyl alcohol. 

Get a bag of epsom salts. Empty the bag into a baking tray and put into the oven for 2 hours at 200 C or 400 F. Then let it cool. This give you anhydrous magnesium sulfate which absorbs water and is insoluble in isopropyl alcohol.

Start mixing your magnesium sulfate with your alcohol until the magnesium sulfate stops clumping together. You should have almost pure isopropyl alcohol once the magnesium sulfate has settled.

I use 70% and it does the job just fine.

I do have 151 ... maybe I'll use that next time :D

 

99% would be hard to store to since its going to degrade quickly ... plus the fumes would be nuts

Its all about those volumetric clouds

I just use vodka/ bacardi

In germany one can get some chemicals in Pharmacies. I got my Isopropyl from there, I think they have acetone, 99% Ethanol, Hydrogen peroxide, hydrochloric acid (Last two probably in not so high concentrations), and some more neat stuff.

You could use plain water to clean old thermal paste off a CPU if its all you have,

although I would be sure to make sure its fully dried before applying new thermal paste.

But ideally you should try to use Isopropyl alcohol as it will be "cleaner" and evaporate quicker.

Vodka doesn't evaporate like rubbing alcohol does, I wouldn't recommend using it.

You can pick up panel wipe at any automotive paint store, it is used as a degreaser prior to paint application.

 

I bought a gallon for around £7, the ingredients are listed as 100% propan-2-ol, which according to Wikipedia is Isopropyl alcohol.

I have to admit I used it in desperation sometimes, but I'm relieved to now know that I was using Isopropyl all along (literally just found out). I thought I was just being ghetto :lol:

 

Could be a very cheap option for some of you out there :)

i just used some methylated spirits when i needed to clean some thermal paste of my CPU it worked fine and its 95% alcohol
