One or Two GTX 980s?

Skcorpion86

So I'm buying at least one GTX 980, maybe two. I CAN afford two, but do I NEED two?

I own three 1080p displays at 60Hz. So playing anything over 60 FPS isn't necessary
I stream ALL my game play, so I take a hit on my FPS counter in games usually.
Very rarely do I play in surround mode (all three monitors) but occasionally I will and I may do it more often since I have a better card(s)
I play all types of games, so my GPU has to be ready for anything (especially for the ridiculous system requirements of AC unity and other games coming out soon)
I MUST be able to obtain at least 60 FPS in the most demanding games at 1080p with all graphics settings maxed out (also while streaming at 1080p 60 FPS)

With all this being said.... should I only buy one GTX 980 or two?

Currently using a gtx 670 Thanks for the help guys :)

you will need more than one 980 for surround. So if you plan to do it sometimes go for 2.

Idea- buy one, see how it performs, if unhappy, buy another

2 pls! Jk, if you stream and have 3 monitors 60hz. I think 2 would be good.

Or you could apply his logic^

That is logical, however if two card is the best for me, I kind of want to get them both at the same time, simply because of the Nvidia choose your path bundle where you get one out of three games with each new card purchase. If I get two cards I can get two free games (two games I REALLY want... AC unity and Far Cry 4)

I play all types of games. yes COD and BF. I plan on getting AC unity, Far Cry 4, Evolve, The Division, a lot of other games that are coming soon, and I have like 120+ games on my PC right now, buit the upgrade is so I can play all these really graphically intense next gen games at the best quality with ease.

I got 2 980's for my 3440x1440 res. That's about 5 million Pixels. All games are playable on more then 60 FPS on all ultra settings. Some older titles with DSR (Dynamic super resolution).

5760x1080 is about 6 million Pixels. I say: go for 2 if yo u can afford it. :-)

Price/performance wise I'd say its a waste. But it's still awesome to have 2 of them ´<3

Yeah unfortunately, but I probably won't play unity on all three monitors. I'd probably only do that with first person perspective games, and racing games.

def 2. Be careful of ram and CPU overclocks screwing with your SLI setup, tho. (Jayztwocents)

I'm not overclocking my Ram, but I am overclocking my CPU. What should I be worried about?

Sometimes they interfere with each other and somehow the GPUs underclock to like 300 MHz or some bullshit like that.

what can I do to prevent this? Can I still have my cpu over clocked?

I am using one for 4k and its fairly good... not quite enough to ultra every setting in some games and anti-aliasing is usually off  - but at 4k the alisaing is very minimal... COD:AW, farcry 3, grid:autosport, civ5: beyond earth all run at 60 fps @ 4k.

Alien Isolation, Shadow of mordor and a few other titles run at about 40-50 fps @ 4k, I usually scale to 1440 or use an xbox controller and play on my tv @ 1080 for these games.

I would think that one would be adequate for sometimes triple 1080 and most certainly for single 1080

If it becomes an issue, either stock clock your CPU on contact your mobo or gpu manufacturer. :)
