How long will the X99 take to become mainstream?

Kanav

I was just wondering when the X99 and 5th Gen i7s will become mainstream like below 400$? I am going to make a build of 2000$ in May next year and am currently going with a MSI Gaming 5 and a 4770K so will X99 be mainstream by then?

What is Up?

Never

X_9 is an enthusiast platform.

The only time "x99" will become mainstream is when Z_7 supports hexa-core and octa-core cpus, in which case its not X99 thats becoming mainstream, but rather CPUs getting more powerful.

Did X79 become mainstream?

The mainstream chipsets are always the Z and H series. Z77/Z87/Z97/H87/H97 etc. I'd go with a i7-4790k for your build, or wait for Broadwell/Skylake.

ATM the CPU and motherboards arent that bad. It's the RAM that is fucking expensive. Broadwell/Skylake will accept DDR3 and DDR4

The Intel Xx9 sockets are never going to be mainstream. The H/B/Zx7 boards are mainstream.

It depends what are you using the PC for. X99 isn't that new compared to Z97. It's still Haswell. The reason why the numbers start with 5 is because Intel always makes the enthusiast platform with 1 number ahead of the mainstream ones. If you're just gaming, then go for an i5-4690K and a Z97 board.

Go with whatever is out when you have the money and whatever you can afford. If it's the latest platform, go for the latest platform. If not, then get X99.
