a good rule to go by:

i5 if you only have 1 gpu, (unless you are doing something other than game that's CPU intensive and uses multi-core a lot)

i7 if you are doing SLI and Corssfire on top-tier cards.

i5 is all you need for gaming m8.  only go w/ an i7 if you need to render videos regularly, or need to run Virtual Machines.

I would consider an i7 if I were aiming for very high framerate gaming on a 144 Hz monitor. On the rare occasion that there is actually a difference in a game between an i5 and an i7, it's often past a 60 FPS cap anyway.

I would go for a i7 4790k because I overclock so id get that little extra performance but you only really need an i5 right now get a 4690k

I would say that the i5 is the best option if you're on a tight budget or if getting one means you'll be able to get the next tier of video cards.

Meaning i5+980 > i7+970 for gaming.

If you do a lotta stuff while gaming like recording, using other programs, running servers, things that are not trivial and would benefit for a spare core or two, the i7 is ideal, if you got the money for it. However, even if you do all those things at the same time, IMO i5+980 > i7+970.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k | CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 | Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z97 MARK 1 | Memory: Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB 1866MHz | GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 4GB Windforce

Storage: Samsung 840 EVO | PSU: CM Silent Pro 720W | Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe | Headset: Corsair Vengeance 2100 | Keyboard: Logitech G710+ | Mouse: Razer DeathAdder Chroma

What? no. @Hezork dude just go with a i5 4690K if you're just gaming and even if you changed your mind and wants to start editing and those stuff. the i5 is more than enough to get started and to work with.

For this moment in time i5 however some games are starting to take advantage of the cpu so in the future a i7 may be better but fir the foreseeable future the i5 will be excellent

This is utter rubbish mate.

The only thing you need hyper threading for is when you regularly run apps/games that benefit from hyper threading. Top tier Sandy/Ivy/Has well i5s wouldn't bottleneck even 4x Titans or 980s/R9 290xs.

Yes, I can read and no it wasn't the same thing he was only asking for a good CPU for gaming and nothing else. I'm just letting the OP know that If its only for gaming an i5-4690K would be more than enough. i7-4790K is a bit too much and a lot more expensive as well if you're only gaming.

so long as you dont have to cut corner somewhere esle to afford it, get the i7.

most modern games i play use 6 to 8 threads as proven in my videos.
