Hello good folk of the LTT community!

 

Since I'm going to get a soundcard when I get my HyperX clouds (Onboard is breaking) I had a question. My I5-2400 has 16 PCIe lanes of course and my graphics card uses 16x in a gaming situation. If I install a PCIe 1x sound card will my graphics card run 8x or 15x or will it run 16x because it uses the 8 PCIe lanes from the chipset?

 

Been confused about this for a while and would like to know the answer

The P67 chipset has 8 lanes too. So your GPU will run at x16 while the sound card runs at x1.

No, the sound card won't effect the GPU.

Also don't spend more than $20 on a sound card. Anything higher is a waste of money.

Going for the Xonar DG @ €25.

His motherboard has PCI slots because its P67 (Just like mine! :D)

I know. There was a topic where the poster bought a DG, but turned out his mobo don't have any PCI slots. Ended up RMA and getting the DGX. Better be safe than sorry.
