so i have a MASSIVE cpu heatsink with a fan attached, and i feel it can live w/out fan. is it bad for the system not to have something plugged in to my cpu fan header?

i have 2 case fans pushing and pulling air in/out of the fins, having a 2nd fan on the hs is unnessecary i think

It is not unnecessary at all. Keep it there. Why do you even want to remove it? I would understand if you wanted to have passively cooled PC but you have fans on case anyway so having fan on CPU wont make it any louder.

you cant live without a CPU fan period

Of course you can, just not by removing it from a normal heatsink.

YES you can if you're not overclocking

On the other side of the house is an i5 3440 at stock speeds. It has a Hyper 212 Plus on it with no fan, it doesn't exceed 65c in Prime95. Given this is in a Corsair 350D with decent airflow.

Unless the heatsink is advertised as a passive heatsink capable of handling the TDP of your CPU, you can't. Even if you have system fans moving air towards it, since they are so far away they honestly probably won't have the pressure to actually push air through the fins very well.

It should work without any problems, though you will need to pay very careful attention to temperatures when you do something heavy.

You can't live without a heatsink, but you can live without a fan on the heatsink. Provided, of course, that the heatsink is large enough to disperse enough heat using the ambient airflow from the case fans..

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

Same performance as a 212 EVO, yeah you'll have no problem running that without a fan on a stock 4460.

People only say it's a bad idea because it sounds like one. Once you try it is when you actually know for sure. I gave it a go just for fun, and found out for myself how capable these coolers actually are in passively dissipating heat.

It's not a big deal as long as the CPU won't overheat, old computers also often had just a heat sink without a fan, to spread the heat. It isn't recommended, because the cooler your components run, the better, but it's up to you.

Since everyone recommands you to keep the fan on, and you seems to want to remove it so badly.

well go ahead and remove it, and post the result. for science.

but tbh, i'd keep the fan on the HS.

may your framerates be high and your temperatures be low. #pcmr

just ran prime95 for a couple of minuettes, and i get a max temp of 73 degrees, and with the fan on i get up to 61 degrees, so its still ok.

but!!!!: when i stop p95, temps drop INSTANTLY back to 40-35 and after 10 secs back to 28-30

Interesting... Can you send us screenshots and maybe a picture of the computer running without the fans? I think it's awesome but a little hard to believe.

On the plus side, here is a gif of when I read this post.
