How important is latency/CAS in ram?

Alir

How imortant is CAS or latency?

Between 8 CAS and 9 CAS, how much of a difference would it make?

my pc will be used for gaming, whole disk (software) encryption - unencrypted data is stored in ram. And then the basics, including programming. Though I don't imagine programming would be that demanding.

Overall, how much of a difference would 8 CAS have over 9?

for gaming it won't change anything if you're using a dedicated graphics card get the cheapest ram that match your motherboard color if you care about that and call it a day...1333mhz will do and latency won't matter...

heck, 800mhz will do, Here:

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 2 VR

its what makes the system snappier feeling when going up in RAM but not necessarily why you have DDR generations. Generations is all about bandwidth, then power consumption, then if they feel like it, latency

System: Intel Core i3 3240 @ 3.4GHz, EVGA GTX 960 SSC 2GB ACX 2.0, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Kingston HyperX RAM, ASRock B75M-DGS R2.0 Motherboard, Corsair CX430 W Power Supply

I have the choice between 2 ram sticks by G Skill.

One matches my motherboards colour. The other doesn't.

Both are at 1600Mhz. The one that matched my colour theme has a letency of 9. The one that doesn't has a latency of 8.

However the pc will be tucked under my table. For now at least. Where it is, the side panel will not be viewable, it is possible this will change at some point in the future. At which point I could just spray paint the heat spreaders.

So choosing between 8 and 9 latency. I feel inclined to go for the 8, especially since as time progresses, so will my needs - decrypted data is also saved in ram so if I can, I would prefer the faster ram - though as I said, it doesn't have the same colour theme.

The sticks I am choosing between:

8 CAS:

9 CAS:

Another stick I may consider with 8 CAS latency:

In the vid, in regards to gaming, Linus mentions that frequency and latency are indirectly proportional, but in this case I would be getting a lower latency for the same frequency.

So are you sure latency won't matter at all in gaming? And what about in other tasks?

It doesn't matter too much. It matters more on CPUs with little cache and integrated graphics, but still. It does make a difference but it's not that big of a deal. It'll be hard to measure, let alone notice.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

This one is better and cheaper, i'd go for it!

Yeah, grab the RAM that i_build_nanosuits has recommended here. Lower latency helps and if you can grab it for roughly the same price then go for it. With the Ripjaws you're getting lower latency and a good clock speed. However if you don't mind the black heat spreader over the blue then grab the G.Skill Sniper:

Latency is CL9 but clock speed is 1866 MHz which really is the sweet spot. Hope this helps.

I'll be purchasing from amazon - so it'll be a tad bit more expensive. I'm not bothered by a few pounds since I'd rather not go through the whole system of opening up a new account and purchasing from a site I've never heard of. This pc has reached its end - buying from amazon would be far more quicker and easier.
