There isn't one. CPU stands for central processing unit. And is commonly referred to as the processor. GPU is the graphics processing unit, commonly referred to as the graphics card

CPU=processor. Two terms for the same device.

Ummmm I've never heard anyone call a GPU a power supply..... :P lol

Hmm... I hope you mean graphics card and not power supply...

Anyway, at a basic level there isn't. I say at a basic level because there probably is a difference when you get rather deep into it. As a consumer it's the same thing.

I can't think straight. I'm posting this as I'm about to go into my differential equations class on only a couple hours of sleep.

Yeah I meant graphics card but I was contemplating explaining PSU=power supply as well. Trying to kill three birds with one stone and I ended up tripping on the rocks instead.

Well a CPU means central processing unit, which is generally considered to be the serial processor in a computer.

The difference between serial processing (CPU) and parallel processing (GPU) is as follows:

Say you gave each processor a book, and asked it to find something.

The CPU would search page by page from the beginning.

The GPU would first rip all the pages out, then search through them all at the same time.

Which one is faster? Well it depends on the scenario really. If what its looking for is on page 2, the CPU will likely be faster. However if it's on page 495, the GPU will probably be faster.

well that some pretty good and useful information :D

but about the CPU and the processor thing (CPU processor not the GPU one ) !?

Well processor is a generic term.

A CPU is a serial type processor.

A GPU would be a parallel type processor.

Well I wouldn't say it's an advanced level sort of thing but when you dig a bit a processor can mean various different parts. E.G. A GPU, PPU, audio processor..

So on the very basic level, when someone says processor there's a very good chance they mean CPU.

So the the word processor isn't a certain part inside the CPU it's the CPU itself

Nope, there are many types of processor.

A word processor is software focused on typing. It's just a generic use of the dictionary definition of "processor." By the same token, a typewriter is also a word processor. Your eyes are light processors. A car is a location processor. :P

NO!

@ichihgo

A processor is any processing unit. this includes a central processing unit (CPU), a graphics processing unit (GPU) and any other chip that has input/output and works on data (so the chipset, sound processor, etc)

a CPU is the main processor, like the brain of the pc. it does specific processing that is best suited for it (high intensity serial tasks), in contrast to a GPU that does low intensity parallel tasks, or the chipset that does high bandwith controller processing

Pls no... Cpu is a subset of processors. Just like a gtr is a subset of cars. It does not equal cars.

At a basic, down to the bone level, they essentially can be interchanged.

Referring to OP's question, it looked like he/she was getting confused between the two as both terms are commonly used to refer to the same object by retailers / manufacturers.

If you want to get more in-depth, and specific, then yes, you are correct.
