Is it just me or is there just not a single motorcycle/top case combination that looks anywhere near good? I'd like to get one but anything I find just makes your bike butt ugly :/

Soft bags are my favorite. You can put them on when you need them, and take them off when you dont without any remaining brackets.

But yeah, most hard bags are pretty ugly.

I have Cortech saddle bags and a tail bag for longer trips. It's a good balance between utility and streamline.

Water penetration is my biggest worry with those. I drive through all weather, non-stop.

EDIT: plus, you can't actually securely lock those to the bike.

I'm not normally a fan of Cruiser bikes. This is the only one I've found. More of a fan of Supermotos than any other type of bike

Thinking about getting a WR450F next year possibly

I have ridden through some heavy rain with mine, and everything inside was nice and dry. Most quality bags are pretty water resistant.

I will give you the point on locking them to the bike though, that is pretty much not happening with a soft bag.

Ah I see,the only cruise bikes I like are the Rocket 3 and Triumph thunderbird storm, maybe the 883 Iron too... (though its slow as fuck)

ah that looks fun

In that case some type of hard bag might be a better choice for you. I guess I have never really worried about people stealing things, I dont even lock my car doors :P

IME anything that's made out of cloth/fibre/zippers will let water through after X amount of time. Haven't had a single exception up until new, unfortunately.

Thism the previous, plus the whole thing where they take up the passenger seat make them just not an option for me, unfortunately.

They do look an awful lot better (top case/bag, that is, I don't mind the look of side cases/bags either way)

If the two helmets you intend on storing are worth an entire month's salary, you tend to think twice about simply leaving them.

Tell me about it. That was my dream bike, until I did a test ride with it. H-D dream shattered to pieces, right then and there.

Yeah my mate sold his (old) speed triple to get one, and I just completely blew him off and I had only been riding like 3 days and he had been riding like 20 years

It looks badass but its like riding a 50cc scooter

Also my Cortechs have a rain cover, that fits over the bag like a rain coat. To be honest I have never used them as the bags have always been water resistant enough without them. I have been very happy.

I do use my bikes helmet locks, but more for convenience than security.

The thing is, on paper it should actually be OK. It's often compared to the Yamaha XV950 (or the Star Bolt, for any Americans around here), which I've ridden shortly after. On paper, both look pretty much the same, power wise. Yet, the Yamaha is almost a second quicker, 0-60 mph. See this article for a handy dandy comparison table.

The biggest gripe I had with the H-D was not so much its peak power, but its power curve. When you drive the XV950, you get your peak power at around 5.5k rpm, after which you can keep reving it until (IIRC, my memory is terrible) 9.5k rpm before shifting, which makes you land right in the power range again when you do shift. The H-D is quite the opposite: you accelerate and hit peak power at 5.8k rpm, only to hit the redline a ms later at 6k rpm. That's just idiotic. Any time you get a sense of "yeah this is moving now" you need to shift gears.

On top of that, the XV950 has one of the smoothest revving V-twins I've ever seen, it's more comfortable, and more fuel efficient. The only issue I had with it was the price, which is a tad too steep for my wallet. An absolute blast to ride on a sunny day though :) Sigh, damnit H-D, why did you make my dream a nightmare?

Just a tad higher price. like, only almost double :P

Speaking of that Harley, the guys at the dealership said I should probably try the Forty-Eight (1200cc sportster). Maybe I should just do that some time this summer. Then again, it'll probably disappoint as well, now that I'm used to the XJR's power.

A buddy of mine had a 1200 sportster for a few years. It was slightly slower in a straight line than my SV-650, even after he put a fancy intake and FI system on it.

He has since sold it and bought a V-Rod.
