Is it worth building a basic PC?

Go to solution Solved by dizmo,

I'd just go with a NUC. They're pretty cheap.

You can also get some small, NUC style prebuilts that include windows and such for well under $300.

I am wondering if it is worth building a PC that will only be used for web browsing, basic word processing etc.

Is it better to buy prebuilt or to build?

You probably could get a more compact pc if you pre-built one such as the gigabyte brix style, or build one yourself and you can upgrade it as much as you possibly could want in the future.

If you want to experience how it is to build a PC (if you have not done so far), then go ahead. But a NUC. as suggested by others, is good enough.

Depends on what you mean by "better".

For a very basic system, prebuilt will likely offer the best price / performance. One reason is that large manufacturers get much better pricing on the o/s. DIY custom builds have to include a ~$100 o/s license. (A number of people are going to jump all over this and tell you how one can get a license for less than $30.)

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

I've build a few PC's already.  So i'll probably just go with a NUC.

Yeah Better as in price to performance
