No they don't, it's very hard to find figures for the number of home made pc's,  I suggest domestic mobo sales would give at least a theoretical upper limit. while discrete GPU shipments can give us a theoretical upper limit for gaming oriented machines.  See my earlier post for the figures on that.

I love your name. Mr Moose, it roles off the tongue.

Funny, just a week ago I read that in Norway specifically tablet sales were stalling and plummeting, while PC sales were rising again, and quite sharply at that.

The ratio of self-built to pre-made is also going up here, but was quite a lot higher than the global average to begin with, Norway has always been very self-build oriented.

I usually buy a backup motherboard at the end of a generation, whenever I've used a system for more than 2 years.

I would have thought the number of people buying second motherboards would be very minimal.   I think the margin of error would be lowest with motherboards.

Motherboards are the third most common/ likely failure point in any computer, after fans (by extension PSUs) and mechanical hard drives.

So that would still make it the best indicator of diy market share. Unless there is a more unique yet essential part that gets changed when the whole computer is upgraded.

I think CPUs are better indicators. It's rare (or not even meaningfully existent) that a same-chipset upgrade makes any kind of sense. Someone upgrading from an FX-6300 to an 8350 is just wasting their money, same with 3570K ---> 3770K.

It is more likely that a motherboard is bought to replace a broken one, than a CPU is bought without also being a full system purchase or upgrade.

Maybe people are getting smarter(relatively) and can build their own?

Or maybe it's just that time of the year when every new cpu and gpu are on the horizon(or has already come out) and people are waiting instead of buying?

Anyone who does not have a sister hates the fact that Kasugano Sora isn't his sister.
I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being condescending. There is a difference, you see...
